Kiambu Governor Waititu, Wife Go into Hiding after Arrest Order

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan Ndung’u have reportedly gone into hiding after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered their arrest over corruption allegations.

Detectives from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have not been able to trace the two since Friday evening.

“We are still looking for him; he has not been traced since Friday night. Officers have been checking at his homes but he is not there,” EACC said.

On Saturday, EACC said its officers had managed to arrest three of the 13 suspects linked to an irregular contract worth Sh588 million.

The three; Charles Chege Mbuthia (Director Testimony Enterprises Ltd), Joyce Ng’ina Musyoka (Evaluation Committee member, Kiambu County) and Simon Kabocho Kang’ethe (Evaluation Committee member, Kiambu County) are being held at EACC police cells.

EACC has directed Governor Waititu and the remaining suspects to present themselves at EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre, Nairobi.

On Friday, DPP Haji said he was satisfied with evidence linking Waititu, his wife and 11 other suspects to the issuance of an irregular contract for the upgrading of several roads in Kiambu County.

“I find that the award of the contract for Ksh.588,198,328.20 with respect to tender No.CGK/RTPW&U/142/2017-2018- for the upgrading of various gravel roads to Bitumen surface in Thika, Limuru, Gatundu North, Juja and Ruiru sub-counties was skewed in favor of M/s Testimony Enterprises Ltd, and the county government officials were culpable,” Haji said in a statement.

He added: “The directors of M/s Testimony Enterprises Ltd were close associates of Ferdinand Ndung’u Waititu Babayao, the Governor of Kiambu County. The total amount of Ksh.147,274,055.39 has so far been irregularly paid to Testimony Enterprises Ltd in relation to the subject tender.”

Governor Waititu and his co-accused will be charged with conflict of interest, dealing with suspect property, abuse of office, and willful failure to comply with laws relating to procurement.

The suspects will also be indicted of fraudulent acquisition of public property, money laundering, and engaging in fraudulent practice.
