Questions as 118 Graduate with Ph.D. from JKUAT

Kenyans on social media have raised questions over the high number of graduands who were conferred with doctorate degrees in the recent Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) graduation.

A total of 118 graduands were awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree during the institution’s graduation ceremony on Friday, June 21st.

Led by US-based Kenyan lawyer and scholar Prof. Makau Mutua, online users questioned the institution’s capacity to supervise 118 Ph.D. students.

“How credible are the 118 PhDs awarded by JKUAT? Either they are fake or academic standards there are near zero. Let’s end this academic fraud,” said Mutua in a tweet.

@OnyangoOlang2 noted: “Does @jkuat have the human resource capacity to have supervised these 118 candidates- Unless the biting lecturers’ shortage in our universities does not apply to @JKUAT.”

@Purity_Bisieri tweeted: “118 PhDs awarded by JKUAT alone today…ACADEMIC FRAUD is on the rise.”

@OnyangoOlang2 added:”… knowing the low number of professors in our universities who could be available to oversee that kind number of Ph.D. candidates.”

@Moha001_Onyango said: “It took my late uncle, PROF CHARLES GERROH, five good years defending his Ph.D. thesis at MASENO UNIVERSITY. And here, we are talking about a man who was the best student in Maseno School and got A FIRST CLASS HONOURS from UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA… 118 PhDs is a JOKE!!”

Lawyer @DonaldBKipkorir tweeted: “JKUAT, as its name says, is University of Agriculture & Technology. But to graduate 118 PhDs when we don’t know from it of any innovation in both fields is a monumental scandal & should be closed. JKUAT should publish the titles of all the PhDs theses & names of the Supervisors.”

118 fake PhD. That is mass production. Is there any University in the world that award 118 PdD’s at once? Never heard of any. hakuna kabisa.

That’s more than twice the Ph.D graduates 2019 class of Stanford, Harvard & Yale combined.

  3. What do you expect in Kenya …
What do you expect in Kenya – corruption is rampant as whole leadership are good examples that the society has embraced this menace.

Fake graduations stated long ways – I remembered a time when Dr. Jasphet karaja the chancellor of UoN there was a mass graduations due favoritism and corruption.

  5. If you produce illiterate…
If you produce illiterate graduates, you do a disservice to our nation. If these Phds are not genuine, they will walk around carrying worthless papers and a miserable life. If they didn’t earn it fair and square, they cannot fairly earn from it to have a good and decent Living.

  6. ?wow! JKUAT it is…
?wow! JKUAT it is inconceivable. With lectures and Professors alike literally criss-crossing the country for work, how and when were these graduates supervised. I know some who lecture/supervise at JKUAT, Nairobi Uni, take the overnight bus to Kisii and have to be in for the next class at 10am the very next day in Narok. I guess they just found a new motivation, just issuing PhDs, but in exchange for what. There’s no question about the validity of the degrees issued and someone should look into it (but who?) No one takes anything seriously nowadays- and if these graduates end up taking key positions in the society, then we are all doomed.

  7. Why the rush to acquire a…
Why the rush to acquire a PhD when you are still an empty head?
At least for Ruto who is supposedly a PhD holder his degree has helped him acquire dam money and Weston and he will never see a day in court! What are those others going to do with their degrees? Of course we know it is not for the good of the country.

  8. This is as a result of “Dead…
This is as a result of “Dead end education”; education that has no objective, meaning or end. We import the syllabus. We have never taken the time to research what type of education fits our people.
We only copy and paste. No skills, just pay money and you will have a fancy paper that will find you a job at Burger King or as a Watch man.
Corruption in education will end up devaluing our education system. Then someone out there will hire foreign experts to come and show us how to educate and the same circle continues.
As a result of this, PHD will have no respect.

  9. What a misuse of resources…
What a misuse of resources for the graduates, parents and government alike. We exchange our hard earned resources and time for a worthless fancy piece of paper.

  10. Do these Kenyan institutions…
Do these Kenyan institutions have license to betray the truth? producing bogus mbogas in broad daylight?? These doctorates will in turn produce future doctors, engineers, economist, scientists, lawyers, educators, pilots???
No not really. The ruse here is that they will be in-charge somewhere, create artificial shortages and hire foreigner for doctors, engineers, etc and just pocket the taxpayers billions.

  11. Bravo bravo bravo they…
Bravo bravo bravo they deserved it?Americans black wazungus who said that yake n stanford r the best top urniversitys in the world.Hii ndio unjinga yaani brainwashed stuff which have bin told or cheated to us??How comes it’s not nairobi or jkia urniversitys in kenya or uganda bin the top???Waafrica wr so stupid n negative we still believe as long as anything is white or from uk/usa/ has to b the top or best.U can see from pope from europe who is worshipped by catholics or white jesus from jerusalem??Bure kabisa sisi waafrica

Godamnit, I need to enroll for PhD at Narok University and get my degree soon. Why struggle 3-5 years in a US campus?

  13. If Sonko can be Nairobi…
If Sonko can be Nairobi Governor, and Joho Mombasa’s, je masomo yana umuhimu upi? On the flipside, if Kidero with all his education and experience can loot public coffers like a SOB, shule ina umuhimu upi? If key positions in the country are handed out as a result of political and tribal affiliations, elimu ina umuhimu upi? Som’n broke a long time ago that needs fixing. The most hardworking, disciplined, honest, intellectual and young individuals are forced out of the country due to high levels of unemployment and corruption. Those who stay back get comfortable with the mess and even muddy up in it. They would never see what people from diaspora see and even if they do, they don’t care- there are more urgent needs that concern them. So many people in high ranking positions are there with fake degrees. IT IS SO EASY to obtain a PhD in Kenya. If you don’t want one from “River-Rori”, you can always pay someone to write your papers, or worse still bribe someone to get that job. Options ni nyingi. This trend will go on for a very long time. After-all how will we ever properly reclaim our country when our best years are spent building/developing another man’s land?
