No More Opening of New Universities, Education CS George Magoha Declares

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has suspended the establishment of new public universities in the country.

Speaking on Monday during a forum on University Education, CS Magoha argues that there is no reason why the country should have many institutions of higher learning offering the same programs.

“Why do you have to duplicate courses? Where this university is doing law, the other is doing the same.  We cannot establish new universities that will only duplicate courses offered in existing ones,” declares Magoha.

“I have received requests to increase the number of universities… you must apply the brakes.”

Magoha further asserts that there are many public universities that are not sustainable. CS Magoha has also told Vice Chancellors that the government will no longer allocate funds to universities.

“Stop dreaming and thinking that the government is going to give you money. It will not,” he notes.

Last month, Prof. Magoha threatened to shut down universities that are teaching irrelevant courses.

“I might be forced to shut some public universities this year and send some lecturers home. We cannot continue having irrelevant courses in our institutions that no single student has chosen for years,” stated Magoha.

Nakuunga mkono ila nakuomba usizuie chuo kikuu kipya kujengwa ikiwa kinahusiana na mambo ya sayansi na teknolojia peke yake.

    • And what do you do for those…
And what do you do for those working, but still want to further their education?

I would hope that the creation of additional Universities is driven by demand…,and not cheap education-Mr. Magoha, if you have received requests to increase the number of universities, could it be that their is demand for it?in other words using your example, the current universities only have room for 2000 students to study law,and 5ooo students want to study law, what do you do with the other 3,000?Expand classes?or have them wait?
As much as I would love all courses to be relevant to the country’s needs, who should decide what is relevant? Is it not also the demand. No student should be forced to take courses they dont want.Iwould also argue that in Institutions of higher learning, not course should be called Irrelevant.Education is unlimited,or should I say knowledge.

  3. Mr Magoha, yes Kenya does…
Mr Magoha, yes Kenya does not need more universities. What we need is an overhaul of the education system to have courses that reflect who we are. Some courses like history need complete overhaul to teach our history, taught by our people and not our story being told by foreigners. What is the difference? The foreign colonialists call our freedom fighters, terrorists. They call their people “adventures” instead of invaders and terrorists. They tell our people they found empty land instead of saying they murdered those that they found and stole their land. While we celebrate Kenya’s Independence day, we never ask ourselves who had taken our God given rights before independence? Who were we fighting in order to regain our independence?
They teach they came to “civilise” our people instead of teaching that they came to separate us from our God and force us serve foreign God’s and religions,(of course using the whitened bible on one hand and a gun on the other), give us foreign names so we no longer know who we are are hence become good slaves of their system as they become masters in our own land.
It’s time our people( those who pay the school fees) start deciding what should be taught or what type of education they are willing to buy and stop importing every packaged curriculum after another that makes no sense to those being educated. How long are we going to allow our people to be miseducated?
Why don’t we have mandatory causes that teach Kenyan local languages up to universities? By teaching “foreign curriculum” who are we creating jobs for? Foreignors or locals?
    Just a thought!

I actually support this. There is something wrong especially for public universities. You go to a town like Nakuru and find all public universities have campuses there, all offering similar courses. It is like the government is competing against itself.
