US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter says the deal for the construction of a multi-billion-shilling Nairobi-Mombasa expressway will be signed this month.
Addressing visiting members of the US National Association of Securities Professionals (Nasp), the envoy has revealed that the agreement for the Sh350 billion road will be struck on April 17th.
The 473-kilometer state-of-the-art dual carriage motorway will be built by an American engineering company, Bechtel.
It will have four lanes capable of supporting sustained speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour and is expected to reduce travel time between Mombasa and Nairobi from the current 10 to four hours.
Its construction will begin at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) along the existing Nairobi-Mombasa highway and will snake through seven Counties to end at the Changamwe roundabout in Mombasa.
The road will run parallel to the current Nairobi-Mombasa highway and will help promote trade and movement in Kenya and neighboring countries.
In 2015, the government hired PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct a feasibility study on the commercial viability of the expressway. Its report indicated the highway was viable.
The infrastructure is projected to generate nearly twice the funds spent to build it over a period of 25 years and will be ready for use by 2023.
“The route will vastly improve the connectivity, efficiency, and safety of the road between Nairobi and the country’s main seaport of Mombasa,” Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) director general Peter Mundinia said in the past.
But But but the SGS was…
But But but the SGS was supposed to take most of the cargo and passenger traffic from the highway. What happened? Four lane highway to where? This is another looting spree. The corruption war by the boy in statehouse is a farce. Pombe kila saaa
Same old question.
What is…
Same old question.
What is the cost per mile?
US. $4 to $6m per mile in rural areas.
US. $8 to $10m per mile in urban areas.
Nairobi to Mombasa, $11.8m per mile, mostly rural.
Two to three times cost in US.
Go figure!

Which way do we go? The Chinese are here to make sure we default on our loans so that they can take control of our resources but they always perform well on projects they are given! On the other hand, the Americans don’t do much except building their military bases on foreign land & warning countries of impending dangers from terrorists! I also feel that we’re slowly loosing this country to foreigners & nobody cares!

The road will run parallel…
The road will run parallel to the current Nairobi Mombasa highway.Kwani ni competition or efficiency. We have failed to maintain the current road remember a few diplomats were in an accident and one of them even died what makes you think we will maintain a new road .There are others areas in Kenya that could benefit from a better road network. Just another looting spree disguised as a development project

This r the same idiots who keep tapping that we should stop borrowing from china.Yet they r chasing the same projects.I have said it here they r jealous of chinese dominance in infrastructure delivery in kenya/Africa.N if they r not why give us 380ksh loan when the same time wanatuonya tusichukue maloans za china???Bure kabisa
You don’t understand that…
You don’t understand that that neither of these countries care for you and that is up to you. I don’t get why everyone is giddy about China? Do you think China is giddy about Kenya? No, I think they are here to do business with the goal of aiding their country. However, we Africans see the Chinese not as business partners but as benevolent lenders, saviours or anything in between. Chinese and Americans are not friends, but they trade massively together and Americans carry a lot of Chinese debt. That is a healthy interaction between nations. The African one is always looking for a paternal relationship and very tumultuous. It’s like a bitten lover. One day, they are praising the West and asking for funds, another day, they are insulting the West (yet they expect somehow to get tourists from those countries to visit), next time you look, they are love stuck on China. If we don’t change our attitude, I can foresee a time 20 yrs from now when one African country becomes very successful and you hear a delegation of Kenyan leaders are in, say Nigeria, to seeking funding to build a hospital. And on these boards, you will hear how the African lender is even better than the Chinese and how they will take care of us etc. Nope, they are there to make money of you not to make money and give to you like the current thinking.
