President Kenyatta has directed all Cabinet Secretaries to proceed on a two-week Christmas recess amid reports of a looming Cabinet reshuffle.
In a letter, the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua has directed all Cabinet Secretaries to hand over to senior ministry officials, who will be in charge during their absence.
“In the spirit of allowing you to celebrate Christmas with family and friends, it has been decided that you can take [the] Christmas [break] from December 21, 2018, to January 7, 2019,” reads part of the circular.
The designated officers must have knowledge of how ministries work, Kinyua further says in the circular.
“Before you proceed on recess, forward the name, designation, office telephone and mobile number of the duty officer to my office. This should not be construed as clearance to travel out of the country.”
“The designated officer should be senior enough to deal with day to day assignments of your office,” Kinyua notes.
This week, reports claimed that President Uhuru is working on a major Cabinet shakeup that will see up to six Cabinet Secretaries and several senior State officials affected.
“I can assure you the President is going to be ruthless,” Jubilee Party Vice Chairperson David Murathe told the Standard.

Is this a Christmas break or…
Is this a Christmas break or a compulsory leave pending the outcome of the impending reshuffle? Either way we all deserve a break and it is obvious none of them would dare to ask for leave or days off work lest you be seen as only seeking leisure and no work to show for it. And more than going to celebrate with family and friends, an old man once told me that the sentimental value of annual leave is for you to go see (firsthand what you possible could have been in your village) and reflect on where you came from. So that when you return to work you know how important it is to have a gainful employment. Back in the day office folks did not like going for leave. For different reasons, these days some people do not want to go for leave, lest someone combs through their cabinet, workflow, spreadsheets, contacts etc and find out the scandals and embezzlement that they have been running under everyone’s noses.
