The immediate former Kenya’s ambassador to Russia is among three suspects being held by police in Nairobi for allegedly attempting to extort cash from Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia.
Hillary Ngondi Kyengo was arrested on Tuesday evening by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alongside two other suspects; James Ndirangu Kagecha and David Mwaniki Maluki.
Daily Nation reports that Kyengo was Kenya’s envoy in Moscow until September 2018 when he was recalled to Nairobi upon expiry of his term and has been awaiting redeployment.
The three are said to have approached Ms. Macharia while posing as DCI detectives and demanded a bribe in order to stop a purported investigation at TSC.
“Three people-Hillary Ngondi Kyengo,James Ndirangu Kagecha & David Mwaniki Maluki who were personating to be @DCI_Kenya Detectives to the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission & attempted to extort money for some purported investigations at the Commission were arrested,” DCI said in a tweet.
“The three suspects will be arraigned in court and charged with attempting to obtain money by false pretenses.”
Kyengo’s three-year tour of duty in Moscow started in January 2016 and ended in September and was recalled to Foreign Affairs ministry headquarters in Nairobi.
