The new Kenyan education curriculum will be rolled out from January 2020, the government has announced.
Speaking during a press briefing on Saturday, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed says the pilot for the new education system has been extended for 12 months to give her ministry and stakeholders more time to put up the required infrastructure.
“The new curriculum pilot will continue for another year, postponing the rollout for one more year to allow for alignment in the education sector and kick off in January 2020,” states Amina.
The implementation of the new 2-6-6-3 system was scheduled to start in January 2019 but Amina says there are loopholes that need to be sealed first.
“We have to make sure that everything is in place, enough teachers are trained… make sure that the books are the right ones…” she says.
In April 2017, the Ministry of Education launched a pilot program for the new system of education in 470 primary and pre-primary schools across the country in a bid to replace the current 8-4-4 curriculum, which has been used in the past three decades.
Under the 2-6-6-3 system, learners will go through two years of pre- Primary education, six years of primary (three years lower and three years upper primary), six years of secondary education (three years junior and three years senior secondary) and three years at the university.
Why is the education policy…
Why is the education policy in Kenya decided by people who have no experience of the public education system? This shambolic system is these people do not care about the state of education. It is wrong for a person to be in charge of the education system if they are sending their children to private schools. Like wise the health secretary should use the public health system not private hospitals.
The boy in statehouse needs to style up.

Hey Jamama, I understand…
Hey Jamama, I understand your point but I also wanted you remind you that both public and private schools use same education system. Only some school are excepted because they are using international curriculum. So it doesn’t matter where you take your children..
I suspect this is a rerun of…
I suspect this is a rerun of a line of long stories about our planning(millennial guidance required).
EVERYBODY expected that it was SOMEBODY’s job “to make sure that everything is in place, enough teachers are trained… make sure that the books are the right ones”. This is not a job that ANYBODY could be trusted to complete without proper planning by SOMEBODY in the MoE. NOBODY took the responsibility, and so as usual NOBODY did it. Come December 2018, and EVERYBODY is surprised that NOBODY did the important job that SOMEBODY was paid to do. NOBODY cared to ensure that all aspects of the new education system were in place. But why should SOMEBODY mislead EVERYBODY that we are “all system go” when NOBODY had done it?
EVERYBODY and ANYBODY who cares about the next generation of doctors, Engineers, scientists, educators, innovators, artists etc, was really pissed off because SOMEBODY slept on the job.
It seems NOBODY is to blame for the lost time and resources, even when it is obvious to EVERYBODY that SOMEBODY needs to own up the mess.
After less than 72 hours, since NOBODY wanted to take the blame, SOMEBODY dashed into hiding behind a bush called government. And behind that “bush” SOMEBODY is telling EVERYBODY that come 2020.1 engines will roll.
Seriously, ANYBODY can see that SOMEBODY is buying time(without paying for it) by rescheduling the roll out to 2020.1. When was this “new details” worked out to be sure that come 2020.1 the infrastructure will align and all loopholes will be sealed? It looks like an after thought because of EVERYBODY’s uproar.
To the government of another day, since it is evident that when you hire SOMEBODY you know or those you know know, still NOBODY is doing an excellent job, do no hire a SOMEBODY. Consider hiring NOBODYs like me (politically speaking) who would burn their Saturday night oil minding about the education of other peoples children when most of your SOMEBODYs feeling entitled to those positions, are in dreamland slumber.
