Gov't Suspends Implementation of New 2-6-3-3-3 Kenya Education System

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has announced that the government will not be rolling out the new education curriculum in January as earlier planned.

Amina says the government has suspended implementation of the new education system to give room for comprehensive consultation with all stakeholders.

The Cabinet Secretary also says that this will give the Education Ministry more time to set up the required infrastructure.

“We have to make sure that everything is in place, enough teachers are trained… make sure that the books are the right ones…” Amina says.

Amina says her ministry will convene meetings with stakeholders to agree on a timetable for implementation of the program even as she assures that no child would be affected by the sudden postponement.

“Those who were to move to Grade Four were the pilot but will instead move to Standard Three but it will not affect their progress,” she adds.

In April last year, the government launched a pilot program for the new 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum in 470 primary and pre-primary schools countrywide in a bid to replace the current 8-4-4 system, which has been used in the past 32 years.

The new system proposes learners go through two years of Pre- Primary education, six years of primary (three years lower and three years upper primary), six years of secondary education (three years junior and three years senior) and three years in the university.

  1. This “new 2-6-3-3-3…
This “new 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum” is Bull, Heifer, and worst: White Elephant (good for nothing). Screw it; it does NOT make a single Cent (Except CORRUPTION Scent for those Headteachers and Accounts clerk’s eager to Siphon school funds).

    • I am with you Kenya. Its not…
I am with you Kenya. Its not the system you employ. Its the tools you have to work with the system. And that starts with discipline to learn, respect, and working hard-laid down from home.
I believe its you who said that, teachers are there to teach, and not to baby sit…
Someone should remind Amina, that you set an openning date when all”engines are running full throttle”.From what she is sayingm it appears that lot of ground work needs to be done.

  2. How can a nation’s education…
How can a nation’s education be entrusted to guesswork? The copy-and-paste, mix-and-match educational initiatives will always undermine access to quality and relevant education that sub-Saharan Africa needs. Particularly for Kenya to keeps its edge in the region, the education need be equitable and inclusive, with sound data-driven assessment. In MOE there is too much crust of the custom practices and coupled with bottle necks created by Knut-kuppet-TSC-axis. The MOE has rolled out many ambitious but cosmetic plans while the old guards with severe allergy for change and technology are still in-charge. The ministry seriously needs bold educators with growth mindset and not safe political appointees with fixed mindset. Innovative and creative minds need be brought on board to engage with like-minded educators of the world in building sustainable education for Kenya. Education is universal and a human right and no nation should be left behind in advancing the future of its people in today’s digital world and tomorrow’s quantum space. Our Education need be comprehensive to serve the key purpose of producing good and productive citizenry among its most energetic population. If anyone is still listening, please include ‘credentialing’ of our top brass in education in your laundry list. Seems like some of them are betrayers of truth with too many activities and little if any accomplishments to show.

  3. 8-4-4 is a good system for…
8-4-4 is a good system for Kenya.

Teachers need to be well paid and well trained.

I don’t understand why they would replace a good education system with Nonesense.

  4. The new system should not be…
The new system should not be implemented. It is another mistake. “Any education that does not take into consideration the inseparable unity between the African lineage and African thinking is based on false principles and must lead to alienation of the individual from his own self, his principles and his past”. We must start teaching education that makes the African know who he is, learn his own history first, his environment, his own language first and his God. Anything foreign has made us foreign in our own land. The first stakeholders in this education are both the Parents and Students. Those are the people who pay for the schools and they are the ones who invest time and money. Anyone else does invest in self interest. Time for the government to evaluate the type and quality of education.
    Our history first!!!
God give Kenya leaders not politicians. God help Kenya!!!

  5. it made no sense right from…
it made no sense right from start . in my time there was no kindergarten we went from looking after goats to standard ONE then secondary 4 years higher 2 years university 3 years for bachelor – or to colleges and from college job was guaranteed and believe me the quality of then cannot be compared to todays 8×4 x4 . too many subjects which have no meaning . Up todate i still remember my geography we knew how to draw and name cities of the world and how the folks in those countries lived and their industries from stone age to renaissance. to day even guys doing tourism do not know where kisumu or marsabit is . we could draw map of kenya with eyes closed name all provinces and their capital cities . give Kenyans their county back

  6. Kenyan government and…
Kenyan government and politician never cease to amaze! They are so obsessed with cosmetic dressing of issues, copying and pasting systems from other countries and putting together hoping that it will solve the problem. Like someone already mentioned here, the problem is not the system but how the system is being implemented and the tools made available to implement it and holding everyone accountable along the way. That’s what is needed, period!

We saw the government’s approach in copying other countries system of government, which culminated into a referendum and see where we are today. A country filled with layers of government and redundant functions meant only to create offices for rich corrupt people ti siphon public money. We have a parliament filled to the brim with people, some of whom don’t even know their roles as MPs. A country that is smaller than State of Texas has as many MPs as the whole US! All of whom are getting paid more than US Members of Congress! And they still want to get more. And we are a third world country!

We have divided a small country into pieces just to create more room for the rich and for corruption. The governors who in reality are doing the same job used to be done by 8 Provincial Commissioners. To make it worse, they still increased the positions of the PC to all counties in the countries in the name of County Commissioners (another name change). This is craziness! Only that this craziness affect the ordinary people toiling everyday to make ends meet and paying even more taxes only to be swindled by corrupt government officials. One British official once said that Kenya is ruled by people behaving like dogs who are licking their own vomit, isn’t it even more true now than then? They make people believe that corruption is something mysterious that cannot be solved! How can a few individuals keep taking billions of public and use for their own gain and the government not be able to forensically trace the money trail and hold people accountable? Since Anglo Leasing till now, not even a single person is serving jail term for corruption and billions keep going. If even one million shillings was taken out of a private company, perpetrators would be caught almost immediately due to financial forensic capabilities. Why not the government?

I always wonder why Kenyan government is so obsessed with cosmetic solution to problems rather than finding the root cause of problems. For instant, they think that just by changing the uniform of police, the problem in the police department will go away. Not so long ago they thought that just by changing names of Police Commissioner to Inspector General the problem would be solved. Same problems persist. They thought that just by changing Ministers to Secretaries that Kenya will all of a sudden be like US, no. They even changed the VP to DP, and it turned out that it’s even worse than before! They even changed the name of anti-corruption to something else, no answer. They changed the name of electoral commission to something else, no answer…the list goes on and now they want another referendum that will just culminate into more name change and cosmetic dressing!! May God help us!

  7. I don’t understand it. Why…
I don’t understand it. Why is Kenya changing g everything from counties to governors to senators? Then education? How old will be the pre- schoolers? This is when private schools are taking in 2 yr Olds for pre-school, and when they get to standard one they are 4 yrs, are rushed to finish school before they are fully developed.Just let the kids finish high school at age 18. Then the rest will follow.
