President Kenyatta Defends His Family's Wealth in an Interview on BBC

President Uhuru Kenyattta has defended his family’s wealth, noting that the fortune was legitimately acquired. In an interview BBC’s Hard Talk host Zeinab Badawi during his just-concluded visit to the United States, Kenyatta said his family’s wealth is public information and that he declares his net worth every year.

“What we own what we have is open to the public as a public servant. I am supposed to make my wealth known and we declare every year, and I have always said, if their is an instance where somebody can say that what we have done or obtained has not been legitimate, say so, we are ready to face any court.” President Kenyatta told Zeinab.

The Head of State further said he and his family are ready to take a lifestyle audit even if it’s backdated to his great-grandfather. He said he’s committed to leaving a legacy by slaying graft.

“This is something I am committed to and something I am determined to leave as my legacy in this country,” he added.

“As a government an as an individual, I am committed to this fight. As you’ve seen over the last few months, cases are now being finalized a lot faster. We are looking forward for our courts to do their part.”

Asked if the ‘big fish’ will be spared in the crackdown, Kenyatta responded; “You’ve already heard about them being presented before courts of law, what is remaining now is for our independent Judiciary to do their work and bring Justice to the people of Kenya.”

  1. “legitimately acquired” what…
“legitimately acquired” what about the well rampant acquisition by Mr. Kenyatta, his family and his coterie of large and valuable farms in a land that left a hungry nation? What about an open attempt by Mr. Kenyatta’s fourth wife, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, and her associates to seize a valuable ruby mine, prospected by two American geologists, ‐by engineering the destruction of public records and the deportation of the owners? what about the dominance, of the “royal family” in such ostensibly illegal practices as trade in charcoal and ivory etc. How about the fact that all Kenyatta’s families have top jobs in the government and most government tenders? How legit is that? It’s not an open play field my any means. Uwizi ni uwizi.
