I'm Not Part of 'Poisonous' Sugar Cartel, Kirinyaga Woman Rep Wangui Ngirici Says

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici has denied reports that she is among politicians involved in the smuggling of contraband sugar into the country.

Speaking at Thiguku village in Ndia constituency during a medical clinic organized by Ngirici and Sons Rescue Team, Ngirichi said neither her nor any member of her family belong to the sugar cartel.

“Neither my husband Andrew Ngirici or I are part of the scam. I am innocent. Let the DCI director arrest me if he finds that I am linked to the sugar deals,” she said and accused some police officers of dragging her family into the scam.

This comes in the wake of continued crackdown on contraband sugar which has has been found to contain traces of mercury and copper, thus unfit for human consumption.

On Wednesday, police impounded 1,365 bags of illegal sugar from Paleah Stores in Eastleigh, Ruiru and Nairobi’s Industrial Area. The warehouses are said to be owned by Ngirici’s brother, Patrick Kuria and her wife Leah Njeri.

On Thursday, the two obtained a Sh200,000 conservatory bail from Kerugoya High Court blocking the police from arresting them over the illegal sugar found in their property.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said a mixer, used to mixing genuine and harmful sugar before packaging was also found at the warehouse.
