UK Top Envoy Boris Johnson on the Spot for Congratulating President Uhuru

United Kingdom Foreign Affairs Secretary Boris Johnson is on the spot once again over his congratulatory message sent to President Uhuru Kenyatta after Monday’s Supreme Court decision that upheld his reelection.

Critics are accusing the envoy of commenting too early to the Kenyan political development.

In a report, UK newspaper Telegraph says that Mr Johnson’s decision to congratulate President Uhuru may have portrayed the British High Commissioner in Kenya Mr Nicholas Hailey in bad light. The daily say that perhaps Hailey was waiting for ‘the most opportune time’ to react to the situation in Kenya.

Telegraph further notes that Johnson’s congratulatory message has set aside UK from its Western peers, who adopted a wait and see strategy as they gauged the political situation in the country.

In August, Boris Johnson received similar criticism for making ‘pre-mature’ diplomatic moves. Johnson had congratulated President Uhuru before Kenya’s Supreme Court annulled August 8th presidential election after finding illegalities and irregularities.

Liberal Democratic Member Tom Brake hit out at Mr Johnson and questioned his ability to act on behalf of Britons. Brake alleged that Boris’ endorsement of Kenyan poll was a clear was indication if his inability to represent Britain in its push for democracy abroad.
