The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has declared war on drunk drivers after acquiring 50 new breathalyzers with the support of the World Bank.

“We intend to use them from tomorrow during our random drink driving operation in towns and major highways,” Francis Meja, NTSA director general, said.

In a statement on Thursday, NTSA called on Kenyans to use taxi option, instead of driving under influence of alcohol.

“These operations are about the enhancement of safe driving including the safety of the drunk driver themselves.”

Meja divulged that the new gadgets will come in handy in the agency’s efforts to end drunk driving.

Four months ago, Court of Appeal ruled that use of breathalyzers to charge drunken drivers in court was illegal. A three-judge bench said laws introduced by NTSA are inconsistent with the Traffic Act.

The judges ruled that anyone found drunk-drink-driving should be charged under traffic laws, not AlcoBlow rules, but Meja said that following the ruling, they would use a different section of the law to charge the drivers.
