The Treasury says it has set aside a budget for a possible run-off between President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga should any of them fail to meet the constitutional threshold of winning an election in the first round of voting.
The two front-runner candidates are locked in a neck to neck race, with a number of recent opinion polls showing that none of them will garner the 50%+1 vote threshold needed for one to be declared the president in the first round voting.
Kenya’s two leading pollsters have shown that neither of them will meet the cutoff point. Ipsos placed President Kenyatta at 47% against Odinga’s 42%, while Infotrak put Odinga ahead at 49% against President Kenyatta’s 48%.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich on Thursday said that the Ministry had set aside adequate funds for the electoral commission to conduct a run off between the two. He was speaking Moiben in Uasin Gichu county.
The constitution stipulates that a presidential run off must be held within three months between the leading candidate and runners up of the first round election.
