Nahashon Kanyi Waithaka, a former Information and Broadcasting Minister during the KANU regime and first MP for Tetu constituency passed away in Nairobi.
Confirming Kanyi’s death, his daughter Wamuyu Mahinda Kanyi said the former minister was pronounced dead at Karen Hospital on Wednesday night.
“He has been unwell and we had talked last night but he developed a bad cold. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Karen Hospital,” said Wamuyu.
The 81-year-old has been ailing and developed a severe cold before his death, his wife said.
He kick-started his political career as a Councillor in Nyeri and later became the first Mayor of Nyeri town around 1972.
He was elected first MP for Tetu in 1988 on a Kanu party ticket and was named as the Information and Broadcasting Minister during former President Moi’s government. Kenya was later moved to the Ministry of Internal Security where he served up to 1992.
