Opposition leader Raila Odinga has come to the defense of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family over accusations of tax evasion.
Odinga accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of unfairly targeting the Kenyatta family, saying President Ruto should have some respect for former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, who played a role in the struggle for the country’s independence.
“You do not know where Kenya is from. She was arrested and locked up in Kamiti during the struggle for independence. She is in her 80s, why are you insulting her yet she is the age of your grandmother?” Raila posed.
Odinga, who spoke at a public rally in Kibra on Sunday, stated that both President Ruto and Deputy President William Ruto should allow the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to do its work.
“Every day, he (Ruto) talks about taxation, claiming there are people who are not paying what is due to the government. Let KRA do its work. Do not politicize the work of the agency. Even in the Bible, Zachayo the Tax Collector was not doing the things you’re doing,” he stated.
He added: “Leave Mama Ngina alone. Also leave Uhuru Kenyatta alone.”
He went on to explain the genesis of the law that exempted the Kenyatta and Moi families from paying taxes on land.
“The law initially only exempted Jomo Kenyatta but when Moi took over, he added his name in 1981. In 1982, the parliament exempted all Kenyans from paying taxes if they inherited land from their parents should they die. That is the law of succession,” Raila said.
“Tax cheats and all sorts of criminals are with Ruto inside his government as he pretends to look for them outside the government. Ruto promised a government for the poor but unveiled a government of billionaires,” he added.

This government is only…
This government is only playing cheap politics. It’s a sure sign, they don’t have an idea of how to govern. Their main preoccupation is to throw mud to find out where it will stick. You don’t lead by chasing your subjects. You lead by bringing them together. What church do they belong to? What Bible do they read? What values do they hold? Most are just a bunch of youth wingers drunk with changaa looking for someone to yell at. That includes their mothers and grandmothers. When are you going to show leadership guys?
Nothing wrong in defending…
Nothing wrong in defending anybody you think is innocent,of unfairly attacked. Infact you should. But,I disagree with the logic or reason RAO is fronting in her defense.A law to be fair and just, has to be applied evenly. However, if the law exempts all Kenyans as RAO says, and Ruto is flaunting it, then obviously Ruto is at fault. And thus deserves condemnation.
Kenyatta family is the…
Kenyatta family is the largest land owner in Kenya and land problems at the Coast originated from the so called founder of the nation allocating huge tracts of land to himself and his cronies stating that people of the coast are “ lazy “they do not “farm” thus will not need the land.Either tax this family because their wealth is ill gotten or force them to return huge tracts of land that they grabbed. To this day they are at it with Brookside dairies and their shady deals and Mama Ngina being paid 500,000 per month for being the last and surviving wife of the first president.

“Ruto promised a government for the poor but unveiled a government of billionaires..” Exactly what Ruto is doing by going after tax cheats, who sums up as billionaire thieves. So, leave Ruto alone Mr. RAO, and let him fix the nation one thieve at a time. We, as the said poor have been waiting for this opportunity. Kenyatta and Moi families always thought Kenya was theirs, and the said poor are squatters or poor tenants. Bure kabisa!
