Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revoked the clearance certificate of the Umoja Summit Party presidential candidate Walter Mong’are.
Mong’are, who was the first candidate to be cleared to vie for the presidency on June 2nd, had his nomination rescinded on Monday after it emerged that he does not hold a university degree.
“As the chief returning officer, upon discovering new information on Walter Mong’are as relates to lack of academic qualifications, I invited him to appear before me today at 2:00 pm to clarify the issue. He failed to honor the invitation,” IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said.
“Pursuant to regulation 42 (2c) of the Constitution, I hereby revoke the nomination certificate of Walter Mong’are of the Umoja Summit Party dated 2nd June 2022.”
The move came after Safina Party presidential aspirant Jimi Wanjigi, who was disqualified from the race on Monday for lacking a degree certificate, complained that Mong’are was given the nod despite having not completed his undergraduate studies.
The revocation of Mong’are’s nomination means only four candidates will be on the ballot including Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya flagbearer Raila Odinga, William Ruto of UDA party, Roots Party’s George Wajackoyah, and David Mwaure of Agano party.
