Police are in pursuit of a prison warden reported to have fled with a gun with the intention of killing his wife.
Edwin Omuse, a warder at Kangeta Prison in Meru County, was seen with a G3 rifle stashed in a sack at Kangeta shopping center on Tuesday evening, according to a police report.
The matter was reported by senior sergeant Benjamin Ndunda, hours after Omuse was issued a G3 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was heard saying that he was headed to Thika to kill his wife, who allegedly defrauded him Sh900,000 he had reportedly borrowed from a local bank.
Police officers accompanied by prison warders were deployed to hunt down the officer.
The incident comes days after an officer attached to Njoro Police Station in Nakuru stormed a local hospital and shot dead his girlfriend before committing suicide.
29-year-old Mary Nyambura had visited the hospital with a fracture on her right leg complaining that she had been assaulted by the officer named Benard Sivo.
While receiving treatment, Sivo stormed the health facility and shot her several times, killing her instantly. He then went back to the station and started shooting aimlessly, forcing his colleagues to scamper for safety.
“The officers were mobilized to disarm him but unfortunately he shot himself on the chin and the bullet exited on the upper forehead and he died instantly,” a police report on the incident read.
