President Kenyatta has canceled his scheduled two-day development tour of the Ukambani region over COVID-19 fears.
Kenyatta was set to visit the counties of Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui from Tuesday to launch key government projects.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua in a statement on Monday said the president postponed the trip over fears of COVID-19 infection spike.
“The trip has been postponed for a few weeks to allow the Ministry of Health to monitor what appears to be the beginning of a 4th wave,” Mutua said.
Kenyatta was slated to inspect the progress of the Konza City and launch the construction of Yatta and Miwongoni dams on the first day of his tour.
He would then head to Makueni and Kitui on Wednesday to commission various projects including Makueni University and the Emali-Ukia -Wote road, among others.
Speaking ahead of Uhuru’s tour, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said the projects would transform the region’s economy and change the lives of area residents.
“Konza city has brought back the region’s glory. We also have a chance to pump water from Thwake multi-purpose Dam to this new city,” said Musyoka.
