Police constable Emmanuel Oyobe has been charged with the murder of Leeds University student Carilton Maina.
Oyobe, a police officer who was attached to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Police Post, was arraigned before High Court Justice Jessie Lessit on Thursday.
He is accused of fatally shooting Maina, 23, on December 22nd, 2018 at Laini Saba area in Kibera. Oyobe pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000.
Oyobe was arrested last week following the completion of an inquest into the death of the 23-year-old student.
Maina, who was on a long holiday, had returned to the country from the United Kingdom to visit his family and was allegedly shot dead by police despite having surrendered.
Residents and family said Maina, who was studying electronic and communication engineering at the UK university, had gone to a nearby joint to watch football when he met his death.
Maina’s love for football earned him a scholarship at Leeds University after completing his high school education at Maseno School in 2013 where he emerged with an A plain.
Police claimed the deceased was part of a gang that was terrorizing Line Saba residents.
“The police received a call from the members of the public who said that they were being mugged by a group of youths. It is then that the police acted and shot one on the spot,” Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri said at the time.
