Uproar as Kenyan Policemen are Filmed Caning Food Vendors, Destroying Their Stock

A video showing police officers beating up food vendors and destroying their stock has angered Kenyans on social media.

In the video taken on Saturday by Weru TV journalist Gregory Muriithi, the cruel officers armed with batons are seen storming a market area where they whip female traders while scattering their items on the ground.

The incident happened at Mitunguu Market in South Imenti, Meru County on Saturday afternoon and the cops claimed they were enforcing an order requiring people to shut their businesses in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The video clip has angered Kenyans on social media, who accused the officers of being heartless, saying there are better ways they could have handled the traders who were simply out to find food for their families.

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga said: “Stupidity of the highest level. Hio chakula wanatupa chini ndio tunahitaji sahii. Respect women. Those chiefs and askaris should be charged. Diplomacy is better.”

Kandara MP Alice Wahome noted: “Let’s not forget the most basic: HUMANITY. What are we fighting here? Kenyans or the pandemic? I have witnessed some markets coming up with sober plans such as opening stalls in shifts (If this stall is open today, the next stall remains closed and opens the next day) therefore favoring social distancing. Let us all be part of the solution or we will perish together.”

Vincent Okemwa wrote: “Indeed this is totally inhuman. They seem not to understand that we are fighting Covid-19, not people. Can someone train them, please. Nor are they immune to this disease, they too need to take precaution and follow Ministry of Health guidelines.”

Sylo Shilah stated: “Even if they are trying to save them from Coronavirus, there is a better way to do it.  We call it humanity.”

  1. True, police officers used…
True, police officers used excessive force to reinforce the curfew. These were not directions…..maybe from above but their distorted thinking. Remember these are people who never qualified to enter the police force but pushed through the back door. The training they went through on how to deal with such a situation exited through the front door. These officers must understand that the modern technology will not spare them. With smartphones in the hands of many Kenyans, their heinous actions will be exposed with the help of social media. Waiting to hear what their superiors will comment.

  2. Kenyans now have to deal…
Kenyans now have to deal with empty head savages in broad who are pretending they are enforcing the law. What part of this behavior is going to reduce Coronavirus. LSK should help to keep this gova straight. We have thugs for policemen.

  3. For those of you chronic…
For those of you chronic complainers about Kenya, what solutions can you offer. Are you proposing having PHDs as cops because they can use their heads? Sorry, order is order; the PHDs will clobber the mamas similarly. Give Kenya a break. Curfew is curfew and must be obeyed. These people will be home on time from now on.

  4. As a country, as a people,…
As a country, as a people, Kenyan cops have a long way to go. Kenyan cops are like bitter low-esteem people waiting to be provoked and show their beastly hyena behavior. No wonder the only benefit they have from their corrupt behavior is porridge abdomen, while their equals at KDF have live in better housing and in their own homes.

Kenyans invite the kind of police hostilities for ignoring the set directives. Then everyone starts complaining they were beaten. But the second day is calm and everybody is doing what they had been instructed to do in the first place. Maybe this is where we are as a country!
