Police in Nairobi are holding three suspects accused of hacking into the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) database and Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS).
Two of the suspects; Michael Onyango Oduor, 54, and Sylvester Onyango, 30, were arrested on Friday after digital forensic experts and detectives from the Serious Crime Unit raided their office in Nairobi’s Ngara estate following a tip-off.
Also arrested was 33-year-old Antony Rugut Korir who works at the NTSA call center. Korir is accused of assisting the hackers to access the NTSA network remotely.
Korir is said to have connected a Local Area Network turtle gadget to get stealth remote access to the NTSA database.
During the operation, detectives seized several USB drives, Sh1.1 million in cash, three cars and fiber laser cutting machine that is used to cut number plates.
They also recovered one number plate, five desktop computers, laptops, logbooks, modems, hard drives, flash drives and a machine used to paint number plates.
The arrest of the three came a week after NTSA warned Kenyans of a fake Facebook account that claimed to facilitate the replacement of old-generation driver’s licenses with digital ones.
