Kenya Ranked 6th Globally in the Number of People Living in Poverty

A new report by the World Bank indicates that Kenya has the sixth-highest number of poor people in the globe.

At least 17.6 million Kenyans are living below two dollars a day, according to the report dubbed Poverty and Shared Prosperity, 2018.

Kenya is in position six in the number of citizens living in poverty behind India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Madagascar.

However, Kenya’s poverty rate is better compared to other countries with only four out of 10 Kenyans living in poverty.

“Over time, many of the countries with high poverty numbers, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, and Nigeria, have grown their economies out of low-income-country status and are now middle- income countries,” read part of the report.

The Kenyan government has introduced a number of programs, including cash transfer to the vulnerable groups among them the elderly, persons with disabilities, street children and orphans, as part of its plans to reduce poverty.

National Treasury created a Sh2 billion Social Assistance Fund for the provision of social assistance for poor and vulnerable persons.

Official data indicates that 8.6 percent of Kenyans (3.9 million people) or 682,000 households were extremely poor as of 2016.

India has the highest number of poor people in the World (175.7 million), which translates into a poverty rate of 13.4 percent, according to the World Bank report.

The report shows nearly 25 percent of global poverty is in the continent of Africa. “Half of the people living in extreme poverty in 2015 can be found in just five countries,” read part of the World Bank report.

The five countries are Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Nigeria.

With a poverty rate of 77.3 percent, Madagascar is ranked the poorest country in the world, followed by South Sudan with a poverty rate of 73 percent.

  3. Kenya and Africa should…
Kenya and Africa should create and adopt their own governing, education systems and go back to their own languages. Not adopt foreign systems that milk and devour the continent. Even having adopted unmanageable western systems Kenya and Africa have survived this far. The change is coming both from within and from without in Kenya and in Africa. The age of the gun-fire that devours everything is coming to an end and the age of Water-spirituality (life) is slowly but surely coming in.
    All will be well.

  4. Last week we read that 4…
Last week we read that 4 million Kenyans risk starvation. We should not be reading such news in 2019.With advanced technology in agricultural machinery, farming, and hybrid seeds,we should be self sufficient in feeding ourselves.
As long as I can remember we have always been treatened with some degree of food shortage.Iwould say this has been going on in the last 40 years.Granted the population has increase, what are our development planners have in mind to tackle this hunger issue?
Ok small progress was made last week when university students created flour that can be used to make ugali in one minute. But we need the maize for that…in abundance.
We we worked as hard as our athletes, we would not be on this poverty list. And we can do it.

  5. Tell me something I don’t…
Tell me something I don’t know this country is going down the drain. Only certain tribes have privileges

  6. It is hard to be a rich…
It is hard to be a rich person in a poor country. Poverty, that’s a tag on every Kenyan’s forehead. Until we make some drastic changes, we are all poor. Pun intended.

  7. This is a shithole nation
This is a shithole nation under poor governance. Its only in Kenya where the leaders advocates that education is the key, spend billions of money in education while the highest number of unemployed generation are the educated youths. Why do you advocate we go to schools yet you can’t offer us jobs? Why? You say we create our own jobs! Curb corruption, create favorable business environment and ease capital access. Lol have recalled an appointment that happened to a person who died 15 months ago while graduates are tarmacking in these streets.

  8. Even those folks who…
Even those folks who celebrated and ran around Nairobi singing Tano Tena are also leaving in poverty? I’m shocked.
