Robbers Dig Tunnel into Kenyan Bank’s Strongroom, Make Away with Sh1.5 Million

A Kitui-based microfinance institution has lost Sh1.5 million following a Saturday night robbery.

Robbers made away with the money after reportedly digging a tunnel leading to Financial Services Association (FSA) bank’s strongroom.

Confirming the heist, Kitui East Deputy OCPD Edward Legei said the incident was reported by the bank’s night guard.

“He told our officers that as he was patrolling the bank, he saw a tunnel and suspected something could have gone wrong and reported the matter to us,” Legei said.

Legei said the equipment used by the criminals to dig the tunnel was recovered at the scene.

Police said the robbers stole the cash after breaking into the bank’s safe and lockers. Police have launched investigations into the incident.

In 2017, robbers used the same method to steal Sh50 million from Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Thika branch. Police said the suspects dug a 30-meter-long tunnel into the bank’s strongroom.

Only 1.5m. That is a lot of labor to end out with 1.5m. They made a huge loss. That amount cannot be able to pay lawyers and other costs.
