President Kenyatta has on Thursday attended the swearing-in ceremony of new Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi.
Kenyatta is the only President who has attended the inauguration ceremony held at the country’s Presidential Palace in Kinshasa as other invited heads of state skipped the event.
17 heads of state including Presidents of Tanzania, Malawi, South Africa, Ethiopia Sudan, South Sudan, Egypt, Sierra Leone, Haïti, CAR and Zimbabwe had been invited but didn’t show up.
Kenyatta has attended the function together with Opposition leader Raila Odinga and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
“Congratulations President-elect Tshisekedi on your victory in the recent General Elections. Your victory is a portrayal of the confidence of the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in your ideals, leadership, and vision for the future,” President Uhuru said in a tweet,
Other Kenyan leaders present include Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga and senators Ledama Ole Kina (Narok) and Amos Wako (Busia).
Tshisekedi takes over from Joseph Kabila in what is the country’s first transfer of power through an election in 59 years of independence.
Tshisekedi was declared the winner of the presidential election held on December 30th, 2018 but Opposition candidate Martin Fayulu has rejected the results, claiming he won the election.
The country’s Constitutional court on Sunday upheld Tshisekedi’s victory paving way for his swearing-in.

Uhuru is a president of impeccable character. He’s a shrewd gambler who knows the right time to act. His main visit to Congo is purely SGR extension and trade. This will be a big win for Kenya in days to come.
