NASA Wants to Sabotage Elections, President Uhuru Tells AU Team

President Uhuru Kenyatta has accused the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) of engaging in a campaign to have the August 8 polls postponed.

Speaking in a meeting in Nairobi with African Union elections observer team under the leadership of former South African President Thabo Mbeki, the head of state said that the series of actions by opposition leaders demonstrated their resolve to sabotage the elections.

Uhuru further alleged that NASA was aiming for chaos and it was clear that they are not interested in a fair competition where voters chose the preferred leaders.

“We have persistently declared that we are ready to accept the will of the people, but the opposition adamantly refuses to submit itself to that commitment. The reason is simple. Subversion of the will of Kenyans,” he said.

The President informed Mbeki’s team that the recent series of attacks by NASA on those charged in ensuring security in the country further indicated they were not ready for peaceful elections and promised that next month’s polls will be free and fair.

“The responsibility of securing the elections and the country lies with the government,” said the President as he promised that the elections will be free, fair, transparent, credible and peaceful.

He informed the AU officials that his administration has made several compromises during the preparations for the polls, but was not ready to have the date for elections changed.

AU Commission chairman, Moussa Faki said the stability in Kenya was crucial for the region, adding that AU wants Kenya to have peaceful polls.
