Kenyans can now seek employment opportunities in foreign countries conveniently from the comfort of their homes using smartphones.
The government has created a platform dubbed ‘Kazi Majuu’ that provides assistance to those seeking employment in the diaspora. Speaking on Friday during the introduction of Gava Mkononi, a mobile app version of e-Citizen, Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said the platform will assess the skills of job hunters. He added that it will provide information on all the documents needed to relocate to another country.
“We have come up with a platform called Kazi Majuu where Kenyans can go online and look for job opportunities all over the World. We will be posting a lot of opportunities from different countries and Kenyans can go there and find a section to put on their details, it will connect them to agents who are recruiting people from different parts of the World,” he said.
The CS touted the platform, saying that it will track remittances and the lives of Kenyans overseas. He said the move will eliminate unscrupulous agents who are not included in the system. Dr Mutua also mentioned that teams will be formed to look for job prospects in different parts of the world and post them for Kenyans to access.
Cases of mistreatment of Kenyan citizens in foreign countries, particularly in the Gulf region, have been on the rise. The hardships Kenyan migrant workers experience in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf are associated with rogue agents who disregard them after exploiting and sending them off. The Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli proposes a plan to eliminate agencies that send people abroad to find jobs.
Data from the government reveals that, as of 2022, Saudi Arabia (KSA), Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were the most common destinations for semi- and unskilled Kenyans looking for work. According to a report by the Ministry of Labour, around 80,000 Kenyans are living and working in Saudi Arabia, mainly as domestic workers.
