Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has reported the successful arrival of the initial groups of Kenyan workers in Doha, Qatar.

This initiative aims to create meaningful employment opportunities for Kenyans abroad and marks a pivotal moment for the programme’s implementation. The arrival of 283 Kenyan workers unfolds over several days, with the first group of 30 departing from Nairobi two days prior to the latest updates, followed by groups of 28 and 80. The final batch of 145 individuals reached Qatar early this morning, receiving a warm welcome from their employers and Kenyan officials at the airport.

“The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Our workers have been efficiently transported to their new destinations, marking a significant step in their professional development and skill acquisition.” says Mutua.

In the wake of these developments, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection announced on November 27 a temporary pause in the national job recruitment programme. This decision, following successful recruitment drives across six counties, is intended to allow for the processing of critical documentation, including passports and certificates of good conduct, for selected candidates heading to Qatar.

Mutua noted that this break also aimed to ensure proper preparations for the Jamhuri Day celebrations, thereby addressing all logistical considerations thoroughly. He assured the public that recruitment activities will resume after these celebrations, with a new schedule that will cover various counties.
The labour export programme underscores the Kenyan government’s dedication to combatting unemployment through international employment avenues.
