Jacqueline Mugo Makes History as First African Woman Elected International Organisation of Employers (IOE) President

Jacqueline Mugo has been unanimously elected as the new president of the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) during the general assembly held on June 2, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland.

This landmark appointment marks the first time in the organization’s more than a century-long history that an African woman has taken the helm, succeeding Michele Parmelee, who served from 2021 to 2024. Mugo’s election is a significant milestone not only for the IOE but also for Kenya and the African continent as a whole. As an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a seasoned Industrial Relations practitioner, Mugo brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. She has been an active member of the IOE since 2007, witnessing its remarkable evolution and unwavering commitment to supporting employers worldwide.

In her acceptance speech, Mugo expressed gratitude and shared her vision for the future of the IOE. She acknowledged the crucial role the organization has played in her professional journey and pledged to advance employer interests globally. Mugo’s extensive contributions to global employment policy, including her participation in the International Labour Conference and various board-level positions, have earned her numerous Presidential and international awards.

As the new president, Mugo will be supported by a team of six vice presidents elected by the IOE’s General Council. Renate Hornung-Draus (Germany) will serve as IOE Vice-President to the ILO, Alexandre Furlan (Brazil) as IOE Vice-President for Latin America, Sonya Janahi (Bahrain) as IOE Vice-President for the Asia-Pacific, Blaise Matthey (Switzerland) representing Europe and Central Asia, Hicham Zouanat (Morocco) focusing on Africa, and Thomas Mackall (USA) representing North America. Mugo’s presidency represents a significant step toward greater gender diversity and inclusivity within global organizations.

Her election underscores the growing influence of African leaders in shaping international labour policies and promoting economic growth and stability. As the IOE moves forward under Mugo’s leadership, the organization remains committed to collaboration, resilience, and advocating for the interests of employers on the global stage.
