The film industry in Kenya has been improving consistently over the years and below we highlight some of the individuals who are making significant strides in Kenya’s film scene.

Brahim Ouma

A rising star in the TV and film industry is Brahim Ouma. He broke into stardom at just 21 years old by playing the lead actor in the popular series Pepeta. Prior to this, he had been gradually gaining recognition in short TV commercials. Not daunted by performing alongside a cast full of big names, Brahim’s portrayal of Junior showcases his impressive acting abilities.

The tale of Pepeta centres around a football prodigy who balances his passion for football with his involvement in crime in the heart of Kibera slums. Brahim considers his opportunity to play this role as nothing short of a magical experience, and it is proof that he is destined for nothing short of greatness.

Dedan Juma

Dedan Juma has an inspiring story. From snatching phones on the streets to becoming a successful actor, Dedan has defied all odds to get to where he is today. His skill has enabled him to secure roles in multiple productions, most prominently as a detective in The Real Househelps of Kawangware. Currently, in his latest program Pepeta, Juma portrays a gang leader who recruits young men into his gang. Through his acting, Dedan has won a large following and provided an example of how one can shift from utter poverty to fame.

Rosemary Waweru

Rosemary Waweru started her acting career at Tahidi High and gained recognition for her role in Tabasamu. She took a break from acting after becoming a mother but has since returned and is now starring in the popular series Faithless.

Lwanda Jawar

Starting his acting career on Mnazi Lane on the KBC in 2000, Lwanda Jawar progressed to becoming a successful stuntman. His proficiency in his skillset saw him go on to study in Germany where he honed his craft. Jawar has been featured in several films including Pepeta where he plays Coach Biki. It’s likely that he will continue to be cast in successful films in the future

Nyokabi Macharia

Nyokabi was recently awarded at the Kalasha Film and TV Awards for her exceptional acting in the popular series County 49. Her portrayal of Debra Maka, the governor’s chief of staff in the fictional Bwatele County, set her apart from the other nominees. Acting has been a passion for Fatma since her primary school days and her journey to stardom is a testament to the adage “practice makes perfect.”

Fatma Mohamed

In the series Faithless, Fatma made her first appearance on TV as a resilient female boxer who conquers the adversities of life. Despite having minimal knowledge of the character during the audition, her innate aptitude in boxing glimmered through. What many people may not know is that Fatma has for several years been training in fitness and martial arts including jiu-jitsu and boxing. Despite filming Faithless while planning her wedding, Fatma’s dedication to acting is apparent through her unwavering passion.
