The Kenya Media Sector Working Group claims the government plans to shut down the broadcast media and the internet ahead of the opposition-led protests on Monday.
In a press briefing on Sunday, Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) president Churchill Otieno said they received reports of the alleged plot to plunge the nation into “information darkness”.
“We have received reports of plans to shut down the broadcast media and the internet and throw the country into information darkness ahead of tomorrow’s demonstrations,” Otieno said on behalf of the group.
“This will be the most ill-advised assault on Kenyan democracy because it denies the public their right to information.”
Otieno stated that the media has a constitutional mandate to inform the public and barring them from administering their role amounts to breaching the law.
He further raised concerns over attacks on media personnel covering the protests, stating that over 20 journalists have been injured since the start of the protests on March 20th.
“…we note with concern the wave of attacks both online and offline meted against media workers in their line of duty. While the safety of journalists should be guaranteed the Kenya media sector working group notes with alarm the increasing number of journalists targeted by law enforcement officers,” he added.
Otieno demanded that the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Inspector General of the Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority ensure accountability for all threats and violence against journalists through thorough, effective and independent investigations.
“We call upon them to call to book the perpetrators while ensuring access to effective remedies and compensations to the victims,” he said.
The Kenya Media Sector Working Group comprises journalists and stakeholders from 17 bodies representing scribes in print, broadcast, and digital media in Kenya.

Kenya’s media is nothing but githeri juveniles. These characters now play victims and blame the government for “attack on media” while glorifying the mad people costing Kenyans their lives. One would be forgiven for thinking that for the Kenyan media it is “Olympics time ” where every semi-illiterate so called journalist with a pin head is competing. Consider this- every media house participated in last elections and did their tallying. When the results did not fit their “paid prediction” they denied Kenyans the right to KNOW in the minimum what their tallies had shown even if not official. Next a mad man cooks up garbage “results” by faceless internet clowns- feeds it to the media and the media asks no question- does not challenge such stupid pronouncements and proceed to offer free press for raila to make it the basis for killing innocent Kenyans and destroy their kiosks. That the media would offer 12hrs of free press to azimio to broadcast pure hate without any editing is criminal. One wonders what the media people think they will gain by supporting the murderous adventure of raila who cares less whether your children go to school or not. Think about this- if HE Ruto’s supporters also came out to “protect their win” what happens? To this day no single media person has asked raila to either show how more that ‘2million votes” were stollen by a person who had no role in IEBC
and by extension security apparatus of the time. Why the media would not ask raila to direct his garbage where it belongs- At the feet of Uhuru who was president and mandated to ensure free and fair elections- only sick people would support such media- who should complain about elections? Uhuru? raila? to whom? How does a candidate cry to another candidate and ask that candidate to “vacate office” for me? Why kill people because you lost? Why lie to your gullible supporters that you have a path to be president without elections or God forbid burning the whole country up in which case there will no one to “president over?” Lord have mercy on our beloved country if this is your media!
