The Karen Hospital sparked a debate on social media on Wednesday after announcing new prices for male circumcision.
Through an advertisement published on its official Twitter page, the hospital said circumcision under local anesthesia will cost Sh40,000 and Sh50,000 using general anesthesia.
The charges, the health facility said, are exclusive of the doctors’ consultations and procedures carried out before and after surgery, bed charges incurred for an overnight stay, and discharge supplements.
“Call us today on 0726 222 002 to book your circumcision appointment. Our Resident Surgeon, Dr. Lance Mayabi, is ready to receive you and walk the journey with you,” the hospital said.
The advert elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans online, a majority of whom termed the prices as highly exaggerated and exploitative given that the same procedure costs as low as Sh500 in some facilities.

@sirken86263924 tweeted: “Total joke!!! This thing is done btn ksh 500-1500.”
@David_Munge quipped: “Weh! Wacha akae bila kukatwa…”

Eti how much? I am glad this…
Eti how much? I am glad this procedure is alien to my culture. I will go to bed with 50K in my pocket.
I’d pay a year’s salary…
I’d pay a year’s salary rather than be circumcised or have my son circumcised. Why would I want the most sensitive and pleasurable parts cut off? That little bit of skin makes a big difference (it’s not just there to protect the glans).
Why don’t we just let everyone decide for themselves whether or not they want irreversible genital surgery? It’s their body after all.
It’s not like it can’t wait. I think it’s only the USA (at around 60% and dropping) and Israel where more than half of baby boys are circumcised. Other countries circumcise, but not till anywhere from the age of seven to adolescence. Only about 12% of the world’s circumcised men were circumcised as babies. Around two thirds of the world’s men (including 88% of the world’s non-Muslim men) never get circumcised.
And circumcision doesn’t help against HIV, or else there wouldn’t be so many countries where circumcised men are more likely to have HIV than men who are intact.

@Mark these are some of the…
@Mark these are some of the traditions that science does not support. It is not medically necessary. Infact in the west right now, there is “a movement” to reclaim the skin that was taken without consent. There is a reason, I have to figure out yet,why the almighty put that skin there. See once it’s gone that’s it unlike hair or nail that grows back.
Iam aware of the so called benefits of circumcision, but these same benefits could be attained in other cheaper ways.
Hustlers gonna have to keep…
Hustlers gonna have to keep the skin. They have all become a tool of exploitation no matter whatever bottom they hit without getting up. The bottom up sisters got some cleaning work to do before enjoying a round of sex.
