Timothy Cheruiyot won men’s 1,500m final to bag Kenya’s fifth gold medal as the World IAAF Championships in Doha, Qatar came to an end on Sunday.
Cheruiyot, who led from gun to tape, clocked 3:29.26 ahead of Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria (3:31.38) and Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski (3:32.72).
Cheruiyot became the fifth gold medalist for Kenya after compatriots Ruth Chepngetich (women’s marathon), Beatrice Chepkoech (3,000m steeplechase), Conseslus Kipruto (3,000m steeplechase) and Hellen Obiri (5,000m).
In the 10,000m men’s race, World junior champion Rhonex Kipruto settled for bronze to stretch Kenya’s medal tally to 11. Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda won gold in the race.
The United States topped the medal table with a total of 29 medals including 14 gold, 11 silver, and four bronzes. Kenya finished second with a combined 11 medals including 5 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Jamaica ranked third with 12 medals, including 3 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals followed by China with nine medals, including three gold while Ethiopia finished fifth with seven medals, including two gold.
Great Britain, Germany, and Japan were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively while the Netherlands and Uganda closed the top 10 list.
