Kenyan Teen Accused of Killing Store Owner in Tacoma, Washington Found Dead

The body of a 16-year-old boy of Kenyan origin was on Monday found washed up on the shoreline at Chinook Landing Marina along Marine View Drive in northeast Tacoma, Washington.

Franklin Wainaina Thuo’s body was found a day after he was allegedly involved in a robbery incident in the same area.

Police said two teens armed with guns stormed a Puyallup store on Saturday evening and demanded cash before shooting dead the owner, identified as Soon Ja Nam.

The robbers are said to have driven away in a Nissan Sentra, which was associated with Thuo.

Police said Thuo’s body had several gunshot wounds, indicating that he may have been killed by his partner, and his body dumped.

The car they used was found near the scene of his death with license plates removed.

Police said Thuo was one of the prime suspects in the killing of Nam.

His accomplice, also 16 years old, was arrested in the parking lot of northeast Tacoma at about 7:30 am on Wednesday.

Thuo’s family announced his death to friends in the US but did not indicate the cause.

“We regret to announce the sudden death of Franklin Wainaina Thuo of Federal Way. Franklin passed away yesterday. Family and friends will be meeting daily at 32613 18th PL SW, WA 98023 to plan for his memorial and burial programs. Your presence, prayers, and financial support will be appreciated. To God be the glory,” read the announcement.

Raising children and providing for them is no easy task. Not a manual is available. That said we can detect potentially dangerous behavior take steps and hope we have nipped it in the bud. What we know for sure is kids can not be raised remotely as you engage in other activities. You have to be present. RIP to this young kid and store owner.

Many young Kenyans in Diaspora die under “Hell of Circumstances” but the Deaths announced like they died Innocent, Celibate Martyrs, or in Church doing the Work of GOD. So: Lets just be Forthcoming and tell Exemplary and Truthful ANNOUNCEMENTS that will Set other Stubborn Kenyan Youth FREE from Crime and other Vices.

Meanwhile as in PROVERBS 22:6: Let’s train our Children in the (Proper) way(s) they should Go (and Live in) without Straying even in their Teenage and Old ages.

    • @ Guest 1, like Mugikuyu…
@ Guest 1, like Mugikuyu said, there is no manual to for raising kids, but even if there was, somekids are just too big headed to heed good advice. Now is that the fault of the parents, that they did apoor job?
Bringing religion complicates matters. How can the loving God let parents raise their children the wrong way,and have these children suffer on his watch? Farther more, isnt prayer supposed to correct wrong directions?
Yes it takes a village to raise a child. These problems we see are aproduct of the society gone wrong.Collectively from community to community, society can correct or mitigate these problems,if they work together, with acommon purpose, and acommon goal. This will not work when one family is too liberal, and free,.while the other is too conservative, and restained in their behaviour. My two cents

      • It’s (most of the Time)…
It’s (most of the Time) those “single” mothers who think they can Raise sons without their Fathers. Casein Point: About a Month ago in Houston, TX, a single African?mother (who had Deliberately divorced her Husband a few Years ago) lost and Burried her 17 yr son (after he was Shot dead) when he went out in San Antonio to join a Gang??? (against his Friend’s admonishment). He died looking for a Father? figure he never had.

        • @Guest1, you are right…
@Guest1, you are right. Single women thinking they can raise boys …or even girls. I believe men do a BETTER job in being better parents than women raising BOTH sexes. It is absolutely crucial for men to be around their kids.

        • Your statement is not…
Your statement is not correct. Many great people were raised by single mothers. A good example is Jesus Christ. Before throwing single mom under the bridge investigate your statement.
This is a wrong forum to address those issue to the family of the late teen may the give you peace.

        • You are one ignorant ” human…
You are one ignorant ” human” being to attack single mothers. Mothers do an incredible job raising their young ones to the best of their ability. You mentioned a single mom in Texas who divorced her husband out of no reason. So!!! Were you the judge in the divorse processing? Keep your ignorance at bay and let the family mourn at peace. I know of a family than raised three kids in a Godly way. Wonderful parents that dearly loves each other. Two kids turned okay and they are doing great but one kid turned to be a gangster. They have done everything to help him but the boy is one of those extremely rebellious kids. I have never and i will never blame the parents in a million years for whatever happens to him in this life. So! Shame on you for your inconsiderate comment!!

Hello, shouldn’t the address be removed from this public forum? I mean, wouldn’t the family share the address of where the vigil might be held at privately, and not have it posted on the world wide web?

    • This is why you get negative…
This is why you get negative comments. Are you implying that had his parents stayed in Kenya none of this would have happened. Are kenyan youth in kenya immune to bad influences due to the salutary effects of the blue kenyan sky or maybe that ever present corruption that is everywhere shields them from bad decisions. No one country has cornered the market. It is human nature and frailty and we all live with it.

@ mkenya halisi IDIOT AS YOU ARE YOU WILL YOURSELF ONE DAY MEET YOUR FATE AND REALIZE HOW IT IS TO LOOS A CHILD NO MATTER HOW . THESE PARENTS DEFINATELY RAISED THEIR KIDS THE BEST THEY COULD . YES BACK TO KENYA THE LAND OF HONEY AND MILD NOT CRIMES PLENTY TO EAT JOBS IN PLENTY . HOW COULD BE LEAVE HOME TO POOR AMERICA WHERE WE CAN ONLY SURVIVE BY STEALING AT GUN POINT

  6. By the way Mkenya, if you…
By the way Mkenya, if you read daily nation or any kenyan paper for that matter, murder, specifically the continued senseless killing of our young women, corruption and other assorted mayhem continue daily, unabated. What pray tell could have prevented this evil behavior in a place where false piety is hypocritically on display- boarding school? Telling the police?, oh wait they are corrupt too. Mkenya, look closer at you motivation before negative posts about diasporans and theirs.

  7. Has it occurred to anyone…
Has it occurred to anyone that Thuo could have been kidnapped by the thieves, his car used in the robbery then he got killed so he could not identify those thieves.

  8. With you Macang’ang’a From…
With you Macang’ang’a From the clip on the news, they were 3 guys. 1 dead, 1 arrested hope the third guy will be arrested too and the truth of the story comes out after he is arrested. But we have lot of question that need be answered, 1, if it’s kidnap case why remove the plates? 2, if he was one of them why kill him? And this shows that someone else had the gun not him. My thoughts.

  9. As an Educator, I know for a…
As an Educator, I know for a fact that telling a student NO and enforcing classroom rules and expectations such as “no phones”, has been a challenge. I often wonder what would happen to them in a real world situation/society when someone tells them NO or they don’t get what they want when they want it. In my opinion the loss of respect, no matter what country your from, is a serious society problem that needs to be taught at home as well as enforced at school. There should be “no tolerance when a person has respect for human life.” My brother was murdered, because of s robbery hone wrong. I am sad for everyone everyday.

    • Kids in School say NO! to…
Kids in School say NO! to Teachers because Teachers themselves have NO manners in School and out there: Drinking silly, Sleeping around stupid, Destroying their Marriages (and their friends’ and Hosts’ marriages) like they Had ever “Seen nor Stepped in Class”. And you even wonder where these Mediocre teachers Graduated from.

  10. I defend mkenya halisi. From…
I defend mkenya halisi. From the way he reasons I think he is a diaspora returnee since he knows a lot about majuu esp US. It is true raising kids in majuu is a challenge. Education is a joke. Kids are given a leakage before a test, dont listen to teachers, are promised candy if they stay quiet in class! So yes they won’t survive in real world even college will be a challenge. If u think I’m wrong, let’s debate

    • I’d wager that cheating in…
I’d wager that cheating in Kenya is far more rampant. I don’t know where you got this candy story from but it never happened in my son’s school or in any of the local schools I know. It seems a lot of Americans do make it and survive nicely. Lastly, many schools are quite good otherwise people would not be trying to get admitted to the schools here. As with any place the neighborhood makes all the difference.Quit with the generalizing. It serves no purpose other than self puffery to make you feel better about your situation.

  11. The problem with us is…
The problem with us is shying away from the TRUTH If the kid was a thug. let all the other people who have thuggish kids now that its either death or prison.

  12. My two cents, I’ve worked in…
My two cents, I’ve worked in a school district for close to six year and 3 in high school. When your kids get to high school, Parents anza kuKata madouble if you can, I know there is single parenting but this is the time to monitor vinoma (bumper). In high school Kids start to separate themselves with race and there’s alot of pressure to hangout with your kind even if some are of bad character, Kuna so many cases of kids of African immigrants getting in trouble because they don’t know how to say no to bad friends coz wanaogopa kuitwa coons, acting white. So wana end up mixing na kids affiliated with gangs, drugs, arms.Heard a case a kid was driving around nama beste who suddenly decided to rob a store, he got a lean sentence ju alibaki kwa gari. Being around and spending more time around them you can be able to notice some behaviour changes, early intervention is the key. Be open and achilia brakes, change style ya kulea achana na ki military iyo ni ya Jamhuri. Live within your means acha kujifunga ma mortgage and new stuff especially if earning less,(utazinunua baaadaye ukisoma ama upate works poa) it will mean working more less time with your family.Punguza heppi, Kenyans tunapenda kudunda,if after party zote nikwako na una ma teenegers, boy your looking for disaster.Wakikosa funds to satisfy their acquired appetite yaku party rest assured they’ll steal.Lastly usiogope kukata ubeste na makupe, yes chagua marafiki vizuri.Kulea ni bidii kukua ni bahati.✌?

    • Here’s the thing, sometimes…
Here’s the thing, sometimes circumstances dictate your actions. The starting rent for a crappy 2bd apt in my neck of the woods is $1325 the average is $2292 meanwhile a home starts at $350k with a median of $424k. Moving to locales where prices are lower is not the answer since those tend to be rural and devoid of jobs. Getting around requires a vehicle since public transport is not well developed. Cities with well developed public transport tend to be worse in pricing you out. What do you do in this case. The only answer I have is a thorough education for green card lottery applicants about the real life facts before they begin the process. I understand the attraction to this place and the notion that everything will be great once you are here – new beggginings and all that. However, attitudes and mental issues are baggage that you can’t leave in kenya. Without a solid foundation in every aspect, things can and will go wrong. As always remember crime, failure etc are not exclusive to the diaspora.

      • True,I concur! But we should…
True,I concur! But we should try to set our priorities right,I mean when you arrive in this country as a parent or become one it’s a different game.I’ve seen families destroyed due to living large and naelewa in life sometimes you need kuji treat but don’t go overboard, working three jobs to finance unnecessary stuff is uncalled for, stress and depression will follow. Others financing big projects in Jamhuri trying to achieve success so first and ruining their kids future,I believe the biggest commodity you can give your kids huku it’s time,Sacrifice kiasi especially wakifika double digits.Jamhuri we have community parenting, uncles, aunts even a neighbor can kick your ass if you misbehave. Here kids niwewe, school or Wi-Fi, your lucky if you have relatives. Also let’s not kick ourselves on the head too much alot of Kenyans have done a tremendous job raising great kids. There’s a few incidents of just bad company, judgement (but numbers rising).I dont know this kid or his family personally nor trying to defend his actions, but it looks like a case of poor choices coz why did he’s accomplice shoot him, was he willing to come forward, was he duped/kidnapped,who knows?. Bottom line let’s use this forum to share our different experiences and how we can be better parents, mine nimeona time ni valuable.May he’s family find comfort.

  13. A lot has been said up there…
A lot has been said up there It’s very easy to talk when you haven’t reach there what I mean if you don’t have those kids . Then you can say anything I don’t blame anyone neither parents or anybody. The Bible is very clear proverbs 13:24 so the biggest problem we have in Diaspora is we are not allowed to train the child second problem if both parents are not in agreement then you as a father you will a mount to nothing training a kid needs both parties to be in agreement to help their son or daughter to be a good person without this nothing will work. But pole for the family that has lost their son it’s painful we need to reach them in prayer or anyway we can help them get over it.

  14. Those of you pointing…
Those of you pointing fingers, it’s easy for you to do so coz it’s not your story. I wish no one a similar fate but think about if it was your own son or daughter, nephew/niece or grandchild. If you don’t know this family firsthand stop speculating and making assumptions of what the parents did or didn’t do.Kids do not come with a manual. For those tbashing single mothers am so perplexed by your shallow mindedness .We have great man and women brought up in single households. This boy came out of a whole family, not a single family. Was raised right and only used what God has instilled in each one of us.A freewill to choose btwn right and wrong. Who are we judge? The thief on the cross said only simple words “please remember me” and was guaranteed salvation. There is no sin greater than the other. But there is also no sin unpardonable if repented. Please uphold all the involved families in your prayer.

  15. In America you can raise…
In America you can raise your kids just as all parents do. They will pretend to be good and you will never know what they do when they as that permission for sleep over. It takes a few days to get brainwashed and before you know they are in gang. Just be happy if your kid dont meet the wrong group. Do not blame the parents as it’s how the environment change good kids.He did bad to shoot but you will never know what happened..we can also speculate his friend shot him but truth will come out…we cannot blame him for we live in a dangerous world.
