Retired President Moi Won't Receive Mourners Following Son's Death, Family Says

Former President Daniel Arap Moi will not personally receive those wishing to offer their condolences following the death of his first-born son Jonathan Toroitich, his family has said.

A statement released by Moi’s press secretary Lee Njiru has not explained the reason for this.

“The family with heavy hearts wishes to inform all our friends that our patriarch Mzee Moi may not be able to personally receive those wishing to offer their condolence.”

“This inevitable stand does not in any way lessen our gratitude dear friends. Please understand with us,” reads the statement.

“We, the entire Moi family have been touched by the overwhelming messages of condolences and expressions of empathy from Kenyans and friends across the world. We thank you all for grieving with us following the passing on of our dear Jonathan.”

The family also says that funeral arrangements will be communicated later.

Jonathan, popularly known as JT, reportedly succumbed to cancer while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nakuru on Friday.

He stayed away from the public limelight since he unsuccessfully run for Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat in 2002 and chose to focus on running his businesses in the agriculture, real estate, and insurance sectors.

He was a Safari rally enthusiast who participated in several competitions locally.

My sincere condolences to the Moi’s Family at this time of sorrow. As for the Mzee, the Man probably has Alzheimer’s disease, it would be unfair for the family to expose him to multitudes of people that will probably make the condition worse. The family is playing it smart. Rest in peace JT..

Sad as it is to watch him mourn the death of his son we must not forget the pain he caused many many Kenyans to go through. Many Kenyans died. Many Kenyans lost their mothers, fathers, sons, daughters and friends. Land grabbing and corruption reached levels never seen before. Kenya has not recovered fully from his year of misrule.
