Uganda Unveils 525m-Long $112 Million Iconic Bridge Across River Nile

Uganda has unveiled one of Africa’s longest bridges built across River Nile. The 525-metre long cable-stayed architectural masterpiece is the second of its kind in East Africa after 680m-long Kigamboni Bridge in Tanzania, which was commissioned recently.

Dubbed The Source of Nile Bridge, it’s the fifth longest cable-stayed bridge in Africa behind 3,900m Suez Canal Bridge (Egypt), 1,360m Lekki Ikoyi Bridge (Nigeria), 950m Mohammed VI Bridge (Morocco) and Tanzania’s Kigamboni.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) Director of Roads and Bridges Eng. Samuel Muhoozi says the infrastructure has the ability to become one of the country’s biggest tourist attraction due to its novelty.

“One of the aims of constructing this bridge was enhancing tourism with addition of this iconic signature bridge in this picturesque location.”

The Source of Nile Bridge was constructed at a cost of a staggering $112m and it’s life span is put at 120 years.
