Kenyan Woman in Minnesota Nursing Serious Injuries after Attack by Husband at a Petrol Station

A Kenyan woman in Minnesota is currently nursing serious injuries after she was badly beaten by her husband.

The woman identified as
Emily Kwamboka was rushed to Norton Hospital after she was found unconscious. Police in New Brighton City were called to a filling station in the area and found Ms Kwamboka unconscious with multiple facial and neck injuries, according to The Star.

Her husband, Bernard Mogaka Okero, has since been arrested and will face multiple charges related to assault, battery and attempted murder through strangulation.

Okero is still in police custody after relatives and friends failed to raise Sh3.5 million bond. He faces a long jail term if convicted of the offences.

Speaking to the Star, Kwamboka said her husband has been assaulting her and authorities had issued a restraining order against him.

“Since he was restrained not to come near me, he started stalking me from my place of work. I didn’t know he was doing this until all of a sudden someone attacked me as I fuelled my car outside a gas station,” she said.

The mother of two who moved to the US to pursue a nursing career added: “Ever since he became a citizen, he went out of control, attacking me at every opportunity. He drinks excessively and demands money from me failing which, he becomes agitated and violent.”

“I fled to Texas, but he followed me there and threatened to kill me if I didn’t cooperate and live with him.”

She said she had stopped at the filling station to refuel her car when her husband arrived and began attacking her.

“I asked him what he wanted but before I could finish, he rained blows on my face and began biting and strangling me. I was unable to scream and next I found myself in hospital with my mum on my bedside.”

Cases of domestic violence among Kenyan immigrants living in the US have been on the rise in recent years.

In March this year, Henry Okong’o, a Kenyan man in New Jersey shot dead his wife, Lydia Okong’o, before turning the gun on himself.

Last year, another Kenyan man in Brooklyn City, Minnesota was charged with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault after attacking his girlfriend. 45-year-old Samuel Nyaboga allegedly used an axe hit his girlfriend in the head, causing her a head fracture.

“If convicted he would serve along time in jail”, why would he not be convicted, short of killing himself, somebody killing him, taking flight,or simply crazy.I hope non of these options are available to him. Let him be jailed for alongtime.
What’s wrong with Kenyan men in diaspora(USA). Dont they learn from mistakes of others? Many have advised that when things are not going well in the marriage department, just pack, count your losses and move on. And Imight add that if you love yourself, think of the consequences of your actions. Is it really worth to spend even 5 years in jail for a crime you would have avoided?
Finally, marriage is not for everybody. Monsters like this wife beater should not even be allowed to date, after release from jail for aleast 7years.

      • What do you mean “what’s…
What do you mean “what’s wrong with Kenyan men in the diaspora”? Last time I checked this Pos doesn’t represent a single Kenyan man. Stfu

    • There is no difference…
There is no difference between me in the diaspora and men in Kenya. You make it sound like there is a disease catching men in the diaspora on men beating women . This means you are not following up on news in Kenya. This women beating is probably a thousand times more in Kenya than in the diaspoara. One reason is that if it happens in thediaspoara , it’s written across every newspaper . In Kenya , only a small fraction if these assaults are reported.
It’s not right by any standard to beat up another person because of domestic issues. There is divorce . Leave, walk away . This man is going to understand what he did the hard way. He is looking for a very long time in jail. All that he worked is going down the drain.
Wish quick recovery to the lady involved.

@ kibogoyo.I talk of diaspora because Iam one of them.I dont know if there is an increase in domestic violence in Kenya,or just increased reporting of such incidences.
Yes I make it sound like there is a disease catching men in diaspora, because, it does not make sense to come all these far,and risk all you have acquired by beating a wife. Its also easier to evade the law in Kenya than is diaspora, especially in USA.Basically the stakes are higher here.Yes some of us,its the high stakes, and the consequences that put us in check.
You are more likely to get”fundisha yeye tabia in Kenya, that in USA. So yes its like a disease catching Kenyan men is diaspora.Yes Kenyan men in diaspora are help to a different standard,by virtue of being mostly in the first world, where the law takes domestic violence more serious than Kenya.Of course that does not mean that it will not happen as case in point here…

I won’t call this woman a saint yet without knowing full account of the story. Compare and contrast the unbuttered photo(right) with that of a regular housewife. The picture is very provocative. It almost a playboy magazine photo. Her bobs are almost totally exposed which tells me that she had another life and it is almost certain that life drove her husband to the extreme rage. Of course we are supposed to control our anger and he will have to pay for his actions but let’s not forget what pervert housewives can drive men into

Good point @ mlachake. You are right there are dumes in prisons who have nothing to lose, and it would be a terrible risk for some feeble fellow trying to make this dumes in to wives. Those that are rally pried on are the effeminate type. Its obvious that a gay fellow would have a field day there, but again not all men are turned in to women. And noI have never been imprisoned, but I know enough about whats going on in there through reading and documentaries.

Je hii temper mbaya itawaishi lini?Try to breath in out slowly and maybe you will relax and more receptive for a positive discussion.Wonder why most of those reported incidents seem to be almost from a particular Ethnic Group.Research needs to be done to find the root cause.Doctorate Students this would be a good dissertation.

  6. This man did a terrible…
This man did a terrible thing to the woman. Kenyan men in US should learn to control their anger especially if there is disagreement with women in their lives. US laws are tough on domestic crimes. Kenyan men beware. A lot of Kenyan women in US, especially those in nursing field, have become opportunist to unsuspecting Kenyan husbands/fiancés.

    • It’s Kenyan men everywhere…
It’s Kenyan men everywhere and anywhere. You sound very silly looking across the ocean to point figures at Kenyans in the diaspora forgetting these attacks happen in Kenya on a daily basis. Just because they are not reported does not make the men in Kenya saints. We all know what happens in Kenya. If you don’t know, start to read more diverse news.

      • “especially those in nursing…
“especially those in nursing field” curious to know what research you have read or done regarding the same. When you claim or announce you are learned please remember to hold yourself to a higher standard before making sweeping statements. Could it be those in the nursing field are courageous enough to report incidents of abuse or even walk away?

        • The Doctor is right. We have…
The Doctor is right. We have a lot of Kenyan women going to America with rudimentary background(meaning in Kenya they never had a bank account or even been inside a car until their date with their flight) but when they get to America and open a bank account, own a vehicle and become a nurse their attitude takes aa 360 degrees turn. They become egomaniac brats who finds no use of men in their lives. They cheat and trick their husbands/boyfriends, dump them and treat them like shit. It’s only after they grow old and toothless after menopause that they try to find essence in relationship. This is a fact demonstrated by many Kenyan women returning home from overseas that were in nursing field

Wanaruona, This are not the days that women were home makers, life has taken a drastic turn because of the economy, two are always better than one but that issue of pointing a finger to a woman makes no sense. I bet they work hard to maintain their families.Educating a woman is educating the whole world.my take.

This is horrible to say the least. It makes utmost sense to just walk away. Unless she comes ferociously after everything you have including wage garnishments, the house, the car, kila kitu. This will turn most African men into beasts. And we don’t have the whole story

    Precious people,
Please let us avoid including the name of victims of violence/ assault on the news article.

  9. Always blaming on the man…
Always blaming on the man society, be in American and you will always pray for our brothers they’re going through hell, some of them are on the mercy’s of the wife, the kneel, cry and begged their wife to forgive even thou they have not done anything, because if wife call 911 it’s done deal, kenyans let’s reason together, this American is not meant for men,its we on as n society.

It is like Kenyans immigrants to the US save and move with their village behaviors to the US.
Even when they are back in kenya for short trips,it is like they start from where they left 10 years earlier. They exhibit raw village and primitive behavior like they never left the village.
Those fake accents ignorant ideas are not amusing at all.
Kenyan immigrants need orientation, debriefing and sudden culture shock to fit in that twisted foreign country…..

  12. I have said it again Kenyan…
I have said it again Kenyan women in the US are a breed to run away from. It’s not normal for this man to react this way. He has been forced to react that way and made to react like a beast without afterthoughts. Kenyan women have become opportunistic for child support, alimonies and screwing up Kenyan men.. This umalaya habits have crossed the brigdges and young men run away from this Kenyan women vultures

  13. IT IS HIGH TIME KENYAN MEN…
IT IS HIGH TIME KENYAN MEN MENTOR EACH OTHER in our diaspora communities otherwise we’ll be seeing more and more of these cases.

Where are the so-called Church elders, where are the so-called community leaders? Ama they only show up on special occasions. I know people like to distance themselves when things are going well in the neck of their woods and i also know that when some people come to the US wanamea pembe but it has to be a communal effort, rather than discussing or gossiping at get togethers, soirees and even in church, young men and women need mentorship. They need people to tell it straight to them and be there when they find themselves in such dilemas ( this applies to both men and women.)

Only a coward raises a hand on a woman. Kenyan men oughta be better than this.

  14. Sounds like this guy had…
Sounds like this guy had mental issues. He would be doing the same thing if he was in Kenya. The poor lady should have sought help with police, social agencies, church, etc. Also the people who knew of this and kept quite should be ashamed of themselves. He almost killed the woman this last time. Fortunately the lady is alive and the guy will be in Jamhuri after his lengthy time in prison. Pole sana and peace.

@msema kweli, she sort help from police. That’s how she got the retraining order. But police are not going to be her body guard. The man stalked her,and that’s hard to control if the man does not respect the law.

Well said but did you know that it’s also happening to men only that they are afraid to report for it may make them not men enough.Mostly if the man is earning less than the wife!!We Really need to change. This is America Jack!!!!!

  16. I hear people say that…
I hear people say that relationships are hard.In that case marriage is not for the faint hearts. If that is the case then imagine how much harder it would be if two people are unmatched. Ithink there lies the problem. So called lovers ignore red flags while darting only for these flags to really bother them after tying the knot.Advise, dont rush into marriage .When you decided to tie the knot, make sure you can live with their faults and short comings they bring into the union.Otherwise the honeymoon shall be short lived.I should also remind people who read the good book that God has given youthe brain to you wisely. No marriage ismade in heaven. When you make a wrong choice for whatever reason, take it as alearning lesson.Again i reiterated that marriage is not for every one.Dont plunge into it because its expected of you by society or family when your heart is not into it.

We Kenyans seem to have a mental issue .This is not normal is stress too big is it about money or relationship disagreement. We need to talk about our problem with people we trust. no one is a hero of stress which comes with demands. We left home to improve our lives but seems we are destroying ourselves .
