Authorities have initiated an investigation into security protocols at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) following a devastating suicide incident that occurred on Friday, November 8.

The tragedy has prompted serious questions about safety measures at this prominent Nairobi landmark. According to a police report, law enforcement officers from Parliament Police Station discovered the body of a young woman, believed to be approximately 18 years old, on the second floor near the amphitheater. The victim had sustained severe injuries consistent with a fall from a considerable height.

While police have not officially released the victim’s identity, social media sources have identified her as Lucy, who maintained an online presence under the handle @seasonedbricks. Before the incident, she had shared a message on her X platform, expressing distress about the month of November, stating in mixed Swahili and English, “Today has to be a good day. Nishachoka na hii November yenu.”

Investigators have determined that Lucy had arrived at KICC accompanying a family member before making her way to the 14th floor, where she ultimately jumped from a window. A key focus of the investigation centers on how she accessed the window in an area occupied by various offices. This incident occurs in disturbing proximity to another recent suicide at View Park Towers, where Charity Muthoni Mutoi took her life on Wednesday by jumping from the 19th floor.

Muthoni had spent time having tea with a friend before leaving behind personal belongings, including her shoes, jacket, and mobile phone, prior to her fatal action. These consecutive tragedies have intensified discussions about mental health support in Kenya. Healthcare professionals, including counselors and psychologists, are strongly advocating for individuals experiencing psychological distress to seek assistance. The Kenya Red Cross maintains a toll-free helpline at 1199 for those requiring immediate support.
