President William Ruto announced the rebranding of the Kazi Mtaani program during the National Youth Service (NYS) pass-out ceremony in Gilgil, Nakuru County on Monday.
The initiative, originally implemented by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been transformed into the “Climate Work Mtaani” program. This revamped project will be overseen by NYS officers and will concentrate on environmental sustainability and greening efforts across Kenya. In his address, President Ruto emphasizes the crucial role of this initiative in tackling climate change through proactive measures. He outlines the program’s objectives, which include recruiting young people to participate in environmental conservation activities and respond to climate-related challenges.
The President has also issued a directive to the minister responsible for NYS, instructing collaboration with the ministers of environment, housing, and defence to provide leadership for the initiative. The rebranded program aims to expand its scope beyond the original focus on infrastructure and community service. A key goal of the Climate Work Mtaani initiative is the ambitious target of planting 15 billion trees, demonstrating Kenya’s commitment to combating global warming and enhancing ecological balance. This endeavour is expected to not only create employment opportunities for thousands of youths but also instil a sense of environmental responsibility among the younger generation.
The initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader environmental objectives and international commitments to address climate change. As part of the country’s strategy to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, the program will encompass activities such as waste management, water conservation, and the promotion of renewable energy sources. These efforts are anticipated to encourage communities nationwide to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the national goal of environmental sustainability.
The involvement of NYS in supervising the program ensures a disciplined and efficient implementation. With its long-standing history of contributing to national development, the NYS is expected to bring a structured and organized approach to the Climate Work Mtaani initiative. The NYS pass-out ceremony was a vibrant event attended by various dignitaries, government officials, and families of the graduates. The ceremony featured a parade by the NYS recruits, showcasing the skills and discipline they had acquired during their training.
