A Kenyan-born United States Marine Corporal Samuel Muturi Wanjiru has been missing in Puerto Rico since March 25, 2024.
A compassionate outpouring of support from Kenyans has resulted in over Sh1 million being raised through a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Muturi’s girlfriend, Natasha Castillo. This surpasses the initial target, demonstrating the strength of collective action in times of crisis. Castillo reports that Muturi was swept away by strong currents while swimming at La Pared beach in Luquillo.
Since the incident, she has been in close contact with Muturi’s family working tirelessly to secure resources that may aid in his location. Funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will be used to cover essential expenses such as accommodation, transportation, food, and ongoing bills while the search continues in Puerto Rico. Additionally, the campaign appeals for prayers and emotional support during this incredibly difficult time.
Muturi’s mother reveals that the couple, together for five years, had planned a short vacation in Puerto Rico to celebrate his birthday. Upon arrival, Muturi contacted his mother with details of their stay. Tragically, on their visit to the beach the following day, Castillo opted out of swimming due to fatigue. Muturi, however, entered the water but was soon caught in a powerful wave and carried away by the current.
“The news that my son was swept away by a current hit me while I was at work,” confided Muturi’s mother to KDTV. “While his swimming ability gives me a flicker of hope that he might be stranded somewhere, each passing day makes it harder to hold onto that hope.”
She has made a fervent plea to the US government, requesting their immediate intervention and assistance in locating and rescuing her son.
