President Ruto Declares War on Illicit Alcohol, Drugs

President William Ruto has declared war on the rampant consumption of illicit alcohol and drugs among young people.

He implored the nation’s youth to channel their energy into productive endeavours, emphasizing that a nation built on a “drinking culture” cannot thrive. The President acknowledged the economic losses associated with a crackdown on illicit substances further recognizing the concerns of legitimate bar owners. However, he made it clear that “business cannot continue as usual.” and that Kenyans must choose a path of productivity, transitioning from a nation defined by drinking to one driven by hard work.

President Ruto’s stern message follows a series of decisive actions taken by the government. On March 6, 2024, the fight against illicit alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse was officially designated a top national security threat. This declaration paved the way for 25 critical directives targeting the entire supply and demand chain of these harmful products. The directives aim to dismantle illicit operations and enforce existing regulations with renewed vigour. The Kenya Revenue Authority and the Kenya Bureau of Standards are actively leading the charge.

A comprehensive review of relevant laws and regulations is underway with the intent to strengthen enforcement mechanisms. Furthermore, the government has pledged severe penalties for public or private officials found complicit in the sale of illicit substances that cause harm or death. This intensified action follows a tragic incident in Kirinyaga County where over 20 lives were lost due to the consumption of tainted alcohol. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki responded by highlighting the gravity of the situation.

He stressed that substance abuse, particularly amongst the young and elderly, is not merely a social concern but a direct threat to Kenya’s future. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua echoed this sentiment, urging the multi-agency security team to redouble their efforts in dismantling the networks responsible for the proliferation of illicit drugs and alcohol.
