Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced that a US multinational company, Sama, is planning to hire over 2,000 Kenyans.
The company is set to hire 600 Kenyans this week and plans to hire 1,500 more in the next two weeks. The training for these new employees will take place in Nairobi and will be attended by the State Department of ICT and the Digital Economy Principal Secretary, Eng John Kipchumba Tanui, and Sama Vice President of Sama Global Service Delivery, Annepeace Alwala. The Kenyan government recently made efforts to create Business-process outsourcing (BPO) jobs in Kenya. The hiring by Sama seeks to affirm this stance. Through a media invite, the multinational announced that it will be recruiting Kenyan youths for several computer vision projects exclusively for the top-ranking Fortune 500 firms.
Meanwhile, a bill in the Senate is seeking to regulate recruiters who send Kenyans abroad without a binding contract and those who do not follow the regulations will soon face fines or be jailed. The proposed Bill 2023 mandates that employers must sign a contract with migrant workers before sending them abroad. Those who fail to comply with this guideline will be subject to a Sh2 million fine, two years in prison, or both.
During her appearance in Parliament on Tuesday, Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore urged lawmakers to approve the bill upon its presentation. The National Employment Authority will now require job seekers to register before seeking employment overseas. The bill aims to promote fair treatment of foreign workers in Kenya while also protecting the rights of job seekers. The Authority will oversee private recruitment agencies with penalties of up to Sh10 million and 10 years in jail for non-compliance.
As part of their responsibilities, the Immigration Department will ensure that migrant workers are stationed in their designated country. On the other hand, the Labour CS will establish communication between migrant workers and Kenya, assist them with legal matters, and keep a record of their relevant details.

My people, due some due diligence before you fall for this one. Ask yourself some questions, is Eng John Kipchumba Tanui from Eldoret? Does he know Mandago or Boss Shollei? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, run for the hills.
