Kenyan-born Kazakhstani athlete Norah Jeruto has been provisionally suspended for an anti-doping violation.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Friday that Jeruto has been suspended “for the use of a Prohibited Substance/Method (ABP)”.
ABP refers to the Athlete’s Biological Passport, which shows discrepancies that can reveal the effects of doping.
The AIU said a notice of the charge has been issued to the 27-year-old distance runner, who changed allegiance from Kenya to Kazakhstan in early 2022.
Jeruto won the 3,000 meters steeplechase gold at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA last July. She clocked 8:53.02, the third-fastest time in history and a championship record.
Following the victory, the Kazakhstan government paid Jeruto €250,000 (about Sh30.5 million) through its award scheme for excelling athletes.
Jeruto was among four Kenyan-born athletes who switched their international allegiance to Kazakhstan in March 2022.
She was granted Kazakhstan citizenship alongside Daisy Jepkemei, Shadrack Koech, and Caroline Chepkoech after the World Athletics approved their request to represent the Central Asian country at the international level.
Rule 1.4.2 of the World Athletics Charter states that athletes who gain new citizenship or wish to change their status can do so if three years have passed since they competed for their country.
Jeruto won the Diamond League gold in the 3,000m steeplechase in 2021.
Good for ur azz now bring ur…
Good for ur azz now bring ur druggie self back to Kenya n try the Ugali n sukuma method that Kenyan Champs use.
So disappointing. Reminds me…
So disappointing. Reminds me of Ruth Jebet who switched allegiance to Baharain, won Gold for them in Oympics, and then was banned for doping.
Jeruto was so eager to please her(prospective) new country that while her approval was still pending, she snubed the Kenya flag. She literaly ran from the track to avoid getting the Kenya flag after winning some race in Oregon.I believe that it was the prefontaine…
As of now, there are over 66 Kenyans on the doping list.Infact right now Kenya leads the world in doping. What a shame. The disapointing and unavoidable fallout from this menace is that, Kenyans who dont dope are still suspect.I have seen some content creaters on youtube even suggesting that 35% suspect Eliud Kipchoge to be doping, and that suspicion extends to other Kenyan world beater as well.
To Kenyan athletic lovers, this is bad news. The country barely dodged the bullet when World Athletics decided not to ban Kenya from participating in international events like it did to Russia.May be that’s wht it will take for Kenya to get its acts together…
All athletes in Kenya have been warned, and educated on the risks of using banned substances. But some still take the risk.By now you would think that the high number of dopers in Kenya would scar them off.
Ethiopia fearful of being linked to the bad image of doping in Kenya,by virtue of its proximity, and the intense rivary it has with Kenyans, has outlawed doping. Those caught doping face jail term. This is what we should do.
I wonder what this Muslim…
I wonder what this Muslim country will tell her.
When kenyans are asked why…
When kenyans are asked why they dope they say it’s hustling which is championed by the kenyan president.
