KRA Official Arrested at JKIA for Allegedly Demanding a Sh35,000 Bribe

A Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) customs official stationed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was arrested on Friday on accusations of demanding a bribe and aiding tax evasion.

The official was apprehended by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and taken to the Integrity Centre Police Station for processing.

The suspect is alleged to have demanded a Sh35,000 bribe from a consignee who had gone to JKIA to collect a laptop sent to him from the United States by a relative, EACC said in a statement on Saturday.

The consignee was required to pay a tax of Sh100,974 for the laptop, but the KRA customs official undervalued the consignment so that he would pay only Sh12,000.

In exchange, the official allegedly demanded the said amount, and was arrested right while receiving it.

She spent the night at Kilimani Police Station and was released on cash bail on Saturday pending further investigations.

I liken corruption to the allure of cheating. Most people, married, or single say cheating is wrong, but still do it with alarming regularity, despite the risk.
It’s here to stay.Unfortunately…for now. However, would it not be nice for SCIENCE to come up with a pill that makes the mind do only the right things, that is harmless to society.Would you swallow it?My proposition might for now sound like something from a science fiction book,or movie, but who knows how man will behave 100 years from now…as we learn more about the function of the brain. Right now there is ample evidence that in the last 20 years testosterone in men has dropped by 20%.As we all know, this hormone is responsible for aggression in men.No wonder we see alot of simp, and sisy men nowdays. If Kenyan women are anything to go by,they are the ones “absorbing” the 20%dropped in testos. We see alot of crimes that used to be a preserve of men being committed by women.

@Maxiley, I’m still trying to get over the tax of over $800. That is beyond steep. Your can buy a very decent laptop for that amount. If I buy a $1k laptop tax at most would be $85 in the highest tax cities in CO.

I am more concerned with the bribe they keep asking the moment you arrive at JKIA! Whether you have a small suit case or 4 of them, a customs officer will rush towards you and ask for ‘tea’ ya salamu. WTF?? This rime I blatantly refused, and they searched my one suitcase for 50 minutes as ‘punishment’. I waited for that long standing while the idiots were just laughing and taking their sweet rime story telling. Other times before I knew what was going on, I used to part with at least $20 just spare my family the agony and they’ll even push my cart for me out in 2 minutes!!!! NEVER ever again. Please spread the word and I am setting a petition to have these maggots removed from JKIA!!

Hey work smart when dealing with those who are hungry for the dollar bribe. Next visit to Kenya do yourself a favor and get kenyan shillings in 50 and 100 denominations if you can unless you are unlucky. When you going home and they want a bribe just put 50 or 100 shilling in their hand. Don’t you ever realize the first thing they do is to pocket the money even without looking? By the time they realize it was fifty you are long gone. That the game I play and it’s been successful three times so far. Last time I was there my bags passed with Shs 50.

How many laptops was it? As a country we are demoralizing anybody trying to create jobs! I have come to realized that it’s better off to live abroad than Kenya too much to deal with there

  10. Why is Kenya government…
Why is Kenya government charging Kshs. 100,000 for a laptop. Who is Kenya government protecting? The cartels?
It’s time for this government to change course.
Anything produced in Kenya by Kenyans should be protected by charging a high tariff if anyone wants to bring it from a foreign country. – Do this to protect our industries.
Anything Kenya does not produce, should almost free duty to Kenyans so Kenyans are encouraged to bring it home.
Anything else is protecting the cartels and encouraging corruption that this government promised to deal with.
Let everyone do business without unfair protection!!
Let us apply the law of just weights
    Let the best man win!!
