The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a crackdown on employees holding fake academic certificates.
The clampdown targeting those in formal employment will be conducted through a collaboration between the DCI and the Kenya National Qualifications of Authority (KNQA).
The move follows a meeting between DCI director George Kinoti, KNQA chairman Dr. Kilemi Mwiria, and KNQA director-general Dr. Juma Mukhwana on Tuesday, where they agreed to form an inter-agency team to deal with fake certificates fraud in Kenya.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Mwiria said many people with fake academic papers are holding formal jobs at the expense of deserving and well-educated Kenyans.
“We are working with all stakeholders to eradicate this practice that is denying Kenyans with genuine academic documents, an opportunity to benefit from their hard work in school,” he said.
Dr. Mukhwana said: “We used to turn away people with fake academic qualifications and now with the partnership, the authority will hand them over to DCI.”
Dr. Mukhwana indicated that a third of Kenyans employed in the formal sector hold fake academic documents.
“We are also working together with universities, TVET, and foreign institutions to ensure that the country has genuine and quality qualifications,” said Dr. Mukhwana.

Wow Wow Wow 1/3 of Kenyan…
Wow Wow Wow 1/3 of Kenyan employees in formal sector hold fake academic documents? Astounding. You add that to those that have milked this formal sector and retired, and you get an unset stomach.
Unbelievable, how did we as a country let this go on?Shame on our leaders.
I guess the good news is that we plan to do something about it.But as we all know, planning,or saying you will do something is not the same as doing it.
I guess that 8 years pilot with fake credentials might have cried,”Hey dont make me a sacrificial lamb”.Iam only doing what a third of those employed in formal sector are doing…And he has apoint.
Sickening.
Sometimes I think the focus…
Sometimes I think the focus should be on innovative thinking rather than degrees. I wonder if Bill Gates, Paul Allen or Steve Jobs would have made it in Kenya – they were all college dropouts. Steve Wozniak, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk all “only” have Bachelors degrees. Warren Buffett does not have a doctorate. Yet each of them is worth more than Kenya’s gdp.
They didn’t use fake…
They didn’t use fake certificates
