Gospel Singer Ruth Matete Finally Buries Nigerian Husband in Nairobi

Kenyan gospel singer Ruth Matete has finally buried her Nigerian husband, Pastor John Apewajoye nearly four months after his death.

Apewajoye was laid to rest at Lang’ata Cemetery in Nairobi on Thursday in a funeral ceremony attended by a few family members and friends.

The Nigerian High Commission in Nairobi had ordered the body to be held at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) mortuary until the probe into Apewajoye’s death is concluded.

The mission early this month granted consent for the release of the deceased’s body for burial but Matete could not bury him immediately due to the accumulated hospital and mortuary bill amounting to over Sh600,000.

Apewajoye, 42, died on April 11th at KNH, where he was receiving treatment for burns he suffered while allegedly trying to fix a gas cylinder at their home in Great Wall estate in Athi River on March 30th.

An autopsy showed Apewajoye succumbed to multiple organ failure occasioned by the burn injuries he sustained in the fire incident. Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor said the deceased suffered 60 percent burns.

Matete, who is pregnant with Apewajoye’s child, was questioned by homicide detectives concerning his death.
