Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o was among recipients of this year’s New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) awards announced on Wednesday.
36-year-old Nyong’o won Best Lead Actress for Us, an American horror movie released in March 2019 and which she starred alongside Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker. She beat front-runners like Renée Zellweger in Judy and Saoirse Ronan in Little Women, among others.
Joining Nyong’o on the list of NYFCC Award winners was Laura Dern, who was honored as Best Supporting Actress for her work in two films: Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, and Marriage Story. Other winners included The Irishman, which won Best Picture, Joe Pesci who was named Best Supporting Actor.
Founded in 1935, the NYFCC, founded includes critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and online publications.
