A police officer on Thursday told the court that he was hired to kill a woman and her daughter in Katani, Machakos County.
Appearing before the court, General Service Unit (GSU) officer Anthony Kilonzo claimed that he was approached by a friend, whom he did not name, to kill the two.
“I recorded statements when I was at the hospital and yesterday when I was arrested …I confessed that I was called by a friend to do the job of killing the lady,” he said.
However, the judge intercepted to ask the suspect whether he understood the application. The prosecution had sought to detain him for 21 days to allow police to complete their investigations into the killing of the two women.
The husband of the deceased woman escaped with gunshot wounds during the shooting and is still admitted at Shalom Hospital.
“He is in serious condition and can’t record a statement at this point and can’t assist in the identification parade,” the prosecution said.
The prosecution opposed the release of the suspect, saying he is a trained GSU officer and is likely to interfere with witnesses if granted bond.
The suspect shot himself on the left leg following the two murders, according to police. Following his arrest, he helped police recover two of the firearms used in the shooting.
Police said the same firearms are linked to a robbery incident at Wilson Airport in Nairobi where one GSU officer was killed.
The court directed that the suspect be detained until November 21st and also be taken for mental assessment.
