US Firm to Extend Sh350 Billion Mombasa-Nairobi Expressway to Kikuyu in New Plan

Details have emerged that the Sh350 billion Mombasa-Nairobi expressway will bypass the capital city after a change of the initial plan.

The Business Daily reports that the state-of-the-art dual carriage motorway will now branch off just past Konza and end along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway at Kikuyu.

The plan is contained in the proposed map on the construction of the superhighway and will consequently extend it to 525 kilometers from the initial 473 kilometers.

The highway will be constructed by an American engineering firm, Bechtel International.

The California-headquartered company is the largest construction and civil engineering company in the United States.

The project’s documents show that the expressway will turn off before reaching Athi River and cut through Ngong before terminating along Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Kikuyu with extensions to Mai Mahiu.

The four-lane road will allow uninterrupted speeds of up to 120 km/h, cutting travel time between Mombasa and Nairobi from 10 to four hours.

The mega infrastructure will be funded by US Export Credit Agencies, including the US Export-Import Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.

Last week, US Ambassador to Kenya
Kyle McCarter said the deal for the construction of a multi-billion-shilling expressway will be signed on April 17th.

Its construction was initially expected to begin at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) along the existing Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The road will run parallel to the current Nairobi-Mombasa highway and will help promote trade and ease movement of people and goods in Kenya and neighboring countries.

“The route will vastly improve the connectivity, efficiency, and safety of the road between Nairobi and the country’s main seaport of Mombasa,” Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) director general Peter Mundinia said in the past.

  1. The first road in Kenya from…
The first road in Kenya from Mombasa to, Busia was built by the British in 1890. 129 years later, why is it that Kenyan brains, industry and capital cannot pull out the task. The Kenya-Uganda railway (Aka, the Lunatic Express) was built by the British in 1896-1901 (Mombasa to Kisumu). Today, we’re indebted to China upward of US$3.6 billion for SGR. Again, 123 years later we can’t build at least the railway-lines? What happened? I think we need to revisit our educational system and governance of our county. I submit that all the Chinese engineers capable of building these magnificent roads and railways and doing mining in our country and the rest of Africa were born post our independence. Therefore, it must be the nature and quality of education and self-confidence that we must address if we are to rectify our sorry state of affairs.

  3. Why do Kenyan parents keep…
Why do Kenyan parents keep laboring and paying for a useless education system. Wrong leadership since independence. When will Kenyans look at their balance sheet and know we are on the wrong path. We import Doctors from Cuba and pay them more than our own doctor’s. We even use translators because we don’t trust those of us educated in our current system.(A system we keep changing because we are not sure what it’s suppose to do for us). We import food; clothing; Engineers. Why don’t we close all the schools since they produce graduates that are sub- standard. At least we will save our parents the hustle of paying school fees and children wasting their time. Then we can have imported foreignors do everything. Kenya needs an overhaul of the whole system. We need to go back to basics and ask a simple question.
Who are We? and what went Wrong?
