Confessed Kenyan drug trafficker Baktash Akasha could be sentenced to life imprisonment by a US Federal Court following the latest development in the case.
The Daily Nation reports that the probation unit of the US Federal Court system has recommended life imprisonment for the Kenyan.
This has been revealed by Baktash’s attorney George Goltzer his request for deferment of his client’s scheduled March 15th sentencing in New York.
In a letter to presiding Judge Victor Marrero, Goltzer terms the proposed life sentence for his client as “an extraordinary recommendation in light of the circumstances in this case.”
Goltzer tells the judge that he has obtained “numerous mitigation documents” to be tabled before the court in support of a lesser sentence for his client.
Judge Marrero has granted the request for postponement of the sentencing date, which is now set for April 19th.
Baktash pleaded guilty to drug-trafficking charges along with his younger brother, Ibrahim Akasha in October 2018.
The two admitted to having attempted to smuggle 99 kilos of heroin into the US as well as obstructing justice by bribing criminal justice officials in Kenya.
Each of the two could be handed prison terms ranging from 10 years to life as per the federal sentencing guidelines.
Authority is given to the presiding judge to impose whatever sentences he deems fit.
It remains unclear whether the probation unit has recommended a life sentence for Ibrahim, whose sentencing date is scheduled for May 31st.
The two brothers have been held in detention facilities in New York for the last two years after being deported from Kenya.
