Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has refuted claims that one of the patients at the centre of last week neurosurgical mishap, which has put the country’s largest referral hospital on the spot, passed away.
A family of a University of Nairobi Bachelor’s of Commerce student had on Sunday claimed that their son died following the mix-up.
However, Kenyatta National Hospital’s Corporate Affairs and Communications Manager Simon Ithai, said that none of the two patients had passed away and that both have “made remarkable improvement.”
Ithai said the patient [UoN student] who made the news on Sunday, was unrelated to the surgical blunder reported at the hospital.
“The late Angelos Miano whose story appeared in one of the daily Newspaper and social media refers him as one of the patients involved in the unintended surgery was not factual,” Ithai said.
“The public should not be confused [by] the misleading information …. the patient said to have passed on was received in critical condition and admitted in the specialised neurosurgery ward … the [other] two were received in the general ward where they are recuperating.”
One of the two patients was scheduled to undergo a brain surgery, but after what the hospital described as a “mix-up”, the procedure was performed on the wrong patient.
The incident saw the facility’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lily Koros sent on a compulsory leave to allow for investigations into the matter.
